ANTONIA SORDILLO Obituary

SORDILLO--Dr. Antonia

Elena Delli Pizzi, September 30, 2016. Widow of the neurosurgeon Sabato-Vincent Sordillo, M.D., and sister of the late Louis J. Delli Pizzi, M.D. and the late Gregory M. Delli Pizzi, M.D., our beloved mother and grandmother Antonia Elena died at home in New York City at age 96. Born in Colledimacine, Abruzzo, Italy, she came with her mother Emilia Barone Delli Pizzi to join her father Antonio in Weirton, WV in 1929. She received an A.B. from NYU Washington Square College of Arts & Sciences, and an M.D. in 1945 from New York Medical College. Dedicating more than 60 years to the practice of medicine, she was well-loved by patients and colleagues. After a rotating internship and residency in Anesthesiology at Metropolitan Hospital in New York City, she practiced anesthesia until 1966, when she entered residency in Psychiatry at St. Vincent's Hospital in Greenwich Village. After residency she continued as an Attending Psychiatrist at St. Vincent's, developing the Consultation Liaison Service and serving as Chief of the Day Hospital for many years. She was a consulting Psychiatrist at the Mary Manning Walsh Home for the Aged and Infirm, and St. Patrick's home for the Aged. A diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at New York Medical College, she was elected a Fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine. She was a member of the Columbus Citizens Foundation, and a lifelong member and first female president of the Morgagni Medical Society of New York. In 1996, she was presented with a Distinguished Service Award by the Consul General of Italy on behalf of the Italian Government. Fond of friends, opera, The New York Times crossword, a good read and a good debate, she will be sorely missed. She is survived by her son Peter Paul Sordillo, M.D. PhD, her daughter Emilia Mia Sordillo M.D. PhD, her daughter-in-law Ellen Regan Sordillo, son-in- law Roger Niles Pearse, M.D. PhD, her grandchildren Laura Sordillo, Diana Sordillo, Vincent Sordillo, Lt. Antonia Elena Pearse Army Reserves (Ret.) of Silver Springs, MD, Lt. Jeremiah Niles Pearse USMC, and Jacqueline Eleanor Pearse, and by her nephew Louis Gregory Delli Pizzi and niece Denise Regan. Friends may call at Frank E. Campbell Funeral Chapel, 1076 Madison Avenue at 81st Street, Friday 7-9pm. Funeral Mass Saturday, at the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola, 980 Park Avenue, NY at 10:00am.

To the Sordillo Family: My heartfelt sympathies go out to the family and friends during this difficult time. I hope that the promise in 1 Thessalonians 4:14 can bring comfort. Knowing that there's a hope for the ones we have lost in death can be so reassuring.
