GERALDINE YOUCHA Obituary

YOUCHA--Geraldine, 87, passed peacefully on June 5. A respected and adored wife, mother, grandma, great-grandma, and friend; she was a veteran journalist and author. She graduated from Northwestern University in 1946 and was a staffer for Coronet magazine. She went on to write the weekly column, "As I Was Saying," for the Journal-News and contributed to Parents magazine, Women's Day, and others. She wrote the books "Minding the Children: Child Care in America from Colonial Times to the Present" and "Women and Alcohol: A Dangerous Pleasure," and co-authored with Judith Seixas: "Drugs, Alcohol, and Your Children: What Every Parent Needs to Know" and "Children of Alcoholism: A Survivor's Manual." She leaves behind her husband of 62 years, Isaac Zeke Youcha, along with her children, Victoria Youcha, Sharon Youcha, and Joe Youcha (Jessica Kaplan), grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Her family will miss her every day and continue to live by her three tenets: be of use, never buy retail, and don't make a fuss.

Joe and Jessica,

So sorry for the loss of an extraordinary woman. Sounds like she was ahead of her time. May your memories bring you comfort. Sorry I never ran into her at Morgan House. I could have used her shopping tips. Love, Ellen & Randy

Honest, sincere, and well grounded. Always concerned about others. I didn't know about never shopping retail!

Zeke,

I will always remember Geri's quick wit and sparkling eyes; bagels and lox at the big dining room table flowing with great conversation. Geri's laughter when I stopped over and was so shocked to see my cousin in your home. Her many amaryllis blooming near the window.

May the love of family and friends embrace you.
