MARY DAYTON Obituary

DAYTON--Mary Lee Lowe, Community leader, philanthropist, and supporter of women's issues, died peacefully at her home in Wayzata, MN on August 21, 2013. She was predeceased by her husband of fifty-four years, Wallace C. Dayton, who died in 2002. Born in Marshall, Missouri, on May 12, 1925, she was the daughter of Braddie Douglass Lowe and the Reverend Arnold Hilmar Lowe. She attended John Borroughs School in St. Louis, and graduated from Northrop Collegiate School in Minneapolis in 1943 and from Vassar College in 1946. Always active in community affairs, she held leadership positions in many organizations in the Twin Cities and elsewhere. She served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Macalester College, The Minneapolis Foundation, The Minneapolis YWCA, and Planned Parenthood of Minnesota, and was a founder of the Minnesota Women's Fund, now the Women's Foundation of Minnesota. She also served as a Board member of the Breck School, the Mississippi River Fund, the Ripley Memorial Foundation, the Sister Kenny Foundation, the Greater Twin Cities United Way, the University of Minnesota Arboretum Foundation, Vassar College, Westminster Presbyterian Church, and other organizations. In addition, after her husband's death, she remained committed to the environmental organizations that he had led and supported, including The Nature Conservancy and the National Audubon Society, and others. She is survived by her four daughters, Sally D. Clement (Stephen) of New York City, Katherine D. Nielsen (Stuart) and Ellen D. Grace, both of Minneapolis, and Elizabeth D. Dovydenas (Jonas) of Lenox, MA, and nine grandchildren: Theodore and Winston Clement; John and Elena Dovydenas; Olivia Nielsen; Samuel Richardson; and Matthew, Katherine, and Rosamond Sturgis. The family wishes to thank Becky Frederick and her staff for their caring service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in her name to any of the above organizations, or the charity of the donor's choice. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 7 at 3 pm at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1200 Marquette Avenue South, Minneapolis.

Sorry to hear of the passing of the nicest and kindest lady I have ever met. I met her and Wally back in 1995 when I sold their home on Sanibel. I had several dealings with Mary Lee since then and will always remember the times we would sit and visit. Matter of fact I am writing this from Wally's desk that she gave me. I think of them often and they will be missed. I can honestly say they are the two nicest people I have ever met.

We were saddened to hear of you mother's passing. My mother and I catered dinner parties for your mother and father. Your mother was a joy to work for and we could see her love of family and friends.
We were not surprised to read all that your mother did to make
our communities a better place. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

To the Mary Lee Dayton' Family,

My parents (Frederick & Inez Deming) knew Mary Lee and her husband quite well. My folks introduced them to me as had a nice chat with each other. When my folks arrived in Sanibel (Snowbirds) as your folks also came down for the Winter. I met Mary Lee at the beach with Wally to find these seashells. She always beat me to find these beautiful sheshells. I really enjoy with Mary Lee and Wally very much. She had been very active Westminster Presbyterian Church and a very valuable assets to the Board of Trustees at Macalister College in St. Paul.
I came to Minneapolis on Wednesday, August 28th, from Baltimore for the conference and to attend 55th Marshall-University High School Reunion. Great time!
Rest in peace, Mary.

Please convey my sympathy and condolences to the entire family, for I have many friends in the family. Dr. Arnold Lowe, Grace Dayton and all of her sons, Sally (helped in our office one summer and I saw her at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York while she was at Vassar). Mary Lee was a strong force for good in our community. I so admired her devotion to Wally's causes as well as her own. Our paths crossed many times; it was a privilege to know her. Her presence as a gracious and wise leader will remain alive in the many organizations she influenced so generously. Warmest thoughts to her family as they mourn her loss and celebrate her life and work.
