Philip Edward Heide - Candy Maker, 75

Philip Edward Heide, the CEO and President of Henry Heide Inc., manufacturers of such candies as Jujyfruits, Jujubes, Red Hot Dollars, and Gummi Bears, died on Tuesday at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, NY. Mr. Heide, who lived in Manhattan, was 75.

Philip E. Heide grew up in New York City, attending Allen-Stevenson School. He attended Portsmouth Abbey School in Rhode Island. Upon his graduation from Portsmouth, he attended The University of Pennsylvania where he graduated from The Wharton School of Business. He served in the United States Army and was honorably discharged.

In 1964, Mr. Heide joined Henry Heide Inc. full time. He spent over 30 years at the company, which was founded by his great-grandfather in 1869. Among his accomplishments, Philip was particularly proud of discovering Gummi Bears in 1977 and bringing the product category to North America.

He was the son of Andrew and Eleanor Heide, who predeceased him. He was also predeceased by daughters Christina and Penelope; and brother Peter Heide.

He is survived by his children Andrew William Heide of New York City and his daughter Elizabeth Heide Fessenden of Greenwich, CT, his son-in-law Jamie Fessenden and daughter- in-law Erin Maxon. He was the beloved grandfather of Ella, Aidan, Ava and Cooper.

He will be remembered for his charm, storytelling and sense of humor, as well as his love of Vermont, the New York Giants, and, above all, his family.

In keeping with his wishes there will be no formal funeral services. Mr. Heide requested that his immediate family hold a private celebration of his life in his beloved state of Vermont.

Andrew and Elizabeth I just found out about your Dad's passing. He was a great friend and I was proud to have worked for and with him. They do not come any better then him. He will be truly missed . I knew Philip from representing his company in Metro NY. I used to come and pick up samples in New Brunswick, NJ on Heide Lane! He was one of the most sincere people in the industry. He was always giving advice since I was a "rookie". My best to his family.
