BRADFORD COLCORD Obituary

COLCORD--Bradford Phillips, 82, of New York City, passed away peacefully at home on April 9th due to complications from polymyositis. Phil was born in Edwardsville, Illinois on April 5, 1931, son of Bradford Colcord and Elizabeth Phillips. He lived in Missouri, Alabama and Pennsylvania from 1931-1941. He graduated from the University School in Cleveland as Salutatorian and continued on to receive a Bachelor of Arts cum laude degree from Yale College in 1952 and JD from Harvard Law School in 1955. Thereafter he served in Army counter intelligence in Germany until 1958. Phil was married to Helen Burgess Johnson on April 7, 1962; they were married 51 years. Phil was a member of the New York, D.C. and Ohio Bars and worked as an attorney for Goodwin Savage Clare and Whitehead as an Associate and Partner before founding Colcord and Mackenty in 1976. Since 1987 he has been a sole practitioner. He had a love of European history and culture serving as President of the American Swiss Association in the 1970s, touring English country houses and collecting English silver. He enjoyed skiing and spent every summer in Maine since 1965. Later in life, travels took him to the Far East, India and Middle East. He was a dedicated Yale fundraiser and Pittsburgh Steeler fan. Devotion to his communities, common decency and curiosity governed his life to the end. Phil is survived by his wife Helen, son and daughter Avery and Hilary, and grandchildren Avery and Hayden Giles and Helena and Philip Colcord, and many friends. A gathering will be held on May 2nd in New York City and another gathering of friends will happen in late July in Maine. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to Doctors Without Borders, The Doe Fund, and The Central Park Conservancy.

Dear Helen and Family,
I was so sorry to hear about this today from "Walsh'ie," a fellow exercise friend in the Yale Club who Phil introduced me to years ago. Probably it was 1992 when I had the pleasure of meeeting Phil and Helen during those classes in the gym. I will always remember Phil's good humor and decency. My very best to you all
