CALVIN HUNT Obituary

HUNT--Calvin. Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, the Ailey Board of Trustees, and staff mourn the passing of Calvin Hunt, our beloved Senior Director of Performance & Production. In 1982, at the invitation of Alvin Ailey, he joined the production staff and over the next three decades he became a pivotal leader within the organization, working closely with Artistic Directors Judith Jamison and Robert Battle. Calvin played an integral role managing Ailey's tours around the world, extending Ailey's role as a cultural ambassador. Calvin had an unparalleled love for Ailey and a passion for life. His sense of humor, wise counsel, and warm friendship will be deeply missed. He was an extraordinary man whose passing is a great loss to the Ailey family and the world of dance. Our hearts go out to his loving wife Margaret, their two children Eli and Brenna, and his entire family. A memorial celebration will be announced later in the spring. Joan H. Weill, Chairman; Robert Battle, Artistic Dir..; Masazumi Chaya, Associate Artistic Director; Bennett Rink, Executive Dir.; Judith Jamison, Artistic Director Emerita

I can´t let the day go by without saying that I think of Calvin every time I pass the NJPAC (which is often) and I still marvel at his patience and composure. How did he put up with all that craziness? How did he put up with Paul Szilard all those years? LOL Calvin, you´re still an inspiration.

Again, time has not dimmed the images of Calvin, in all his beloved roles. Ailey is our connection and has been for many years now. I expect to see him walking through, along with Alvin, and to be able to say, "All is well" because they are still with us. Yes, they are still with us.....they are two giants time cannot diminish or erase. And my love still pours out to them as it always will.

My dear big brother and friend Calvin. He was such an amazing person. He was always there to give me much needed advise during my growing years (smile). I knew Calvin Hunt when he and I danced with Jo Emery in Tacoma in the late 60's early 70's. He and I were Partnered in a disco jazz piece --I am 5'2 and he was much much taller :) when he lifted me in the air --I felt like I was 12 feet up!!! I have an extreme fear of heights but never let on,I just stared at the ceiling and said to myself don't look down!! He never dropped me!! Many years later I went to see Alvin Ailey in Seattle and saw that he was the General Manager!!! I waited to say hello and must say I was so proud to have been able to say I had danced with such a successful person!!He had such a full life and I am sure he lives on in his children and the heart of his wife.May you all find peace in the fact that although his life was short he got to make a living in dance with one of the greatest companies in the world. I am taking my dance students to see Alvin Ailey II tomorrow for a field trip. (I teach dance at a High School)I will be thinking of him and hope his family has found peace in these past years.

On this Thanksgiving day, I am grateful for the memories of Calvin. His love of the Ailey organization, wit, calm temperament, expertise of Ailey production and of course that lovely bass voice. To the Hunt family, I send my condolences and prayers. May you be sustained with peace and warm memories of a wonderful man.

He was my friend for nearly 25 years. In that time, he has had such an impact on my life (too much to say). He was an amazing champion of world love. Someone who brought joy to everyone, no, everything he encountered. I loved him as I would my most trusted friend and brother. There is now a void in my heart that will never be filled. Sleep on my friend. Until we meet again.

Farewell to the gentle giant who filled our hearts with so much love and warmth. I met you first in 2004 when you were planning your first visit to Kong Kong and renewed our friendship when you returned in 2007. You personified the Ailey company. Your professionalism, understanding and huge personality made organising your tours so easy - they were a joy. All of us here will miss you. We send your deepest sympathy to your wife, children and extended family.

Calvin was indeed a gentle giant, especially in spirit and soul. If he knew you---if only by face and not by name---he treated you as his best friend. He was the quintessential Ailey ambassador and always spotted us during the City Center season and greeted us with warmth and genuine interest. He has left a huge legacy of love as a husband, father, friend, colleague and human being. It is our hope that this legacy will console Calvin's family and loved ones as they carry on his good works and are infused by his uplifting spirit.

May 13, 2014

Around 1987, I went over from a Business Meeting job to the Palace Theater in Stamford, CT. I knew that Ailey was loading out, and I wanted to meet Calvin. We had spoken on the phone about some European presenters honoring (or not ... ) Tech Riders. At that time, of course, he was already a master of international touring. He stopped whatever box he was packing up and we had a nice chat. Our careers continued to intersect and overlap for another 25 years. The dance world will miss him. I'll miss him.

When I was his employee, Eli first came home, and I was so touched by his deep love for his son. What a tremendous loss to the world of Ailey, the world of dance, and the world of humanity.

To the Ailey Company and family of Calvin Hunt,
We at the Jerome Robbins Dance Division at the New York Public Library want you to know how sorry we are for your loss. The staff members here at the Dance Division have worked with Calvin for over twenty years and he was always a joy to work with. I especially remember a time some years ago when he mentioned he had been home to see his family and how renewed and revitalized he was from seeing his family. This really impressed me and stayed with me, as my family came to be a source of revitalization for me as well. We dearly loved Calvin and he will be dearly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Calvin was so welcoming when I started working at Ailey, and always went out of his way to check in on me even though he wasn't in my department and had no reason to. He was selfless that way, always thinking about others. I'll always remember when he became a father and the joy he radiated holding Eli as well as how strange it was for him to be the center of attention and letting others coo over him for once. God knows he deserved the spotlight!

My thoughts are with Margaret and his family and also to all who he touched.
