DAVID JAFFEE Obituary

JAFFEE--David P.,

beloved father, friend, teacher and scholar, died after a valiant struggle with pancreatic cancer on January 20, 2017. He was 62. A native New Yorker, David received his B.A. and Ph.D. from Harvard University, and always marveled that he became a professor. Being paid to read books was a dream come true. Trained in Colonial American History, David soon became interested in American Material and Visual Culture and reinvented himself as a scholar who focused on how objects and images could speak to history. He taught at City College of New York from 1987 to 2008, and at the Bard Graduate Center, where he was Professor and Director of New Media Studies from 2007 to the present. The author of People of the Wachusett (1999) and A New Nation of Goods (2010), he was a prolific essayist and workshop instructor who introduced many students to the study of non-literary documents. Son of the late Dorothy Brown and late Eugene Jaffee, and husband of the late Barbara Brooks, he is survived by his daughter Isadora Jaffee, his greatest pride, his beloved Schneider cousins he considered to be like siblings, and by legions of friends and students inspired by his kindness and generosity. Memorial gifts may be made to the David Jaffee Fellowship in Visual and Material Culture at the American Antiquarian Society, 185 Salisbury St., Worcester, MA 01609.

I was one of David's NEH students, and attending his Summer Institute--meeting him, learning from him, and working with the wonderful people he brought together--transformed my whole understanding of scholarship and teaching. I just had that one opportunity to work with him but I've continued to think of him as a role model, someone with rare generosity of spirit that's not easy to find. For some reason I always thought I'd have the pleasure of talking with him again about our shared interests because he took such a genuine interest in us all. I think all of us who worked with him in the NEH Institute felt the same way, like we had bonded in a special way through the privilege of sharing a subject he cared about so deeply. With deepest sympathy and warm thoughts for his family

We are so saddened, Izzy, to hear about the loss of your father. We liked him so much. We were always so happy to see him either walking Oscar on the trail or at the club where we enjoyed his company and his contagious laugh. We will miss it! It was so nice to see him enjoying life again. We know you, your father and your mother all loved the camp and we'll miss having you up there as part of the community. Please know that we are thinking of you.
With deepest sympathy,
Jeanie and Andy Evans

I will miss the warmth, the conversations, the dinners over pizza and beer, the successful and sometimes unsuccessful attempts at grilling, and seeing the pleasure David took from his camp on Birch Trail, and his sharing of his love of Barbara, Isadora and Oscar.
