While I have a flood of memories of Don as a camper and counselor, my most vivid one is of him at a campfire at Post Camp. A more devoted alumnus one can't imagine, so the surprise of him saying that Winnebago ruined him for the outside world came as a shock.

He explained that the values of trust, reliance, and cooperation made him think that people would act that way as he interacted with others. I think he was being ironic in saying that he had to learn the hard way that not all people could be trusted, but he certainly caught my attention and that was 20 years ago.

His most cherished personal ideals live on in David and David and Becky's wonderful family, whom I am fortunate to call my friends.

Love to Betsy and the family.

For Donald Landis,
(©2014)

there is a man there
he is right there in silence and stillness
he is right there in the eye and in the heart
of the light that is there
right there with him. that light.
right there.
in our hands and hearts
in our weeping onto the stones
of the path we walk and dream
of the children we have become
when the truth birthed us into this pain
right there where he is.
now gone
gone up before the winds and gone up
the great mountain
gone up into our dreams
gone into the open arms of the sea
right there
right where we were
yes, my friend,
we were the ones who were there
right there
as the sky gate opened
