Grandma Gay will continually and eternally be in the hearts and memories of her three grandchildren whom she cared for so deeply and selflessly and instilled upon them the most precious things of life. As she did for me.

Greenwich Country Day School is deeply saddened by Mrs. Matthaei's death. She was a favorite author and a wonderful guest speaker. Her joie de vivre, charm, and passion for the history of the Lakota Sioux engaged our students and fired their interest in history. Here is to hoping that her beautiful spirit of intellectual curiosity and wonder about the world live on in the lives of all the students she reached through her work. She is a rare gem who made the world a better, more interesting, cultured place.
