In the late 1970s, Margot Gumport was my House advisor and my Chemistry teacher. She saw me through tough times (including her own Chemistry class!) with that dry wit and unflagging focus that I now realize (nearly 40 years later) were the hallmarks of her dedication and tremendous effectiveness as a teacher. I count myself lucky to have known her.

Mrs. Gumport represented the best of Dalton to me--intellectual rigor and close attention.

I knew Margot at Dalton School from 1987 - 1996. She had a remarkably sensitive but always straightforward way of speaking about her advanced chemistry students. How she praised originality of thought and curiosity of mind! It was a pleasure to hear her recommend someone she envisioned as a potential scholar. She actually elevated the nature of Dalton School singlehandedly. Her family, former students and colleagues would have to acknowledge this with the same smile they remember. What a pleasure to have known you in the College Office, Mrs. Gumport. Sandy Feig, New York City

Mrs. Gumport was my chemistry teacher 49 years ago, and is one of my all-time favorite teachers, even after college and three different graduate schools. In addition to her clear explanations of complicated material, she had a great sense of humor, and I remember fondly the wonderful twinkle of her eyes. How lucky for Dalton that she stayed for so many years!

I never met Margot Gumport, but for 30 years I've known and admired her son Lenny, a brilliant, independent thinker with unfailing integrity and boundless humanity. That profile can be no accident. Margot Gumport must have been a vivid model.
My family's condolences to all who loved her.

I had Mrs. Gumport for two chemistry classes at Dalton about 20 years ago. She was a great teacher, and part of the reason I became a scientist (and now have a career that I love). She really cared about her students--I remember she had us all over to her house for dinner one time. I hope her family can take some comfort in the fact that she had a positive influence on so many students over the years.

So sorry to hear about your family's loss. I recall many gatherings with both Margot and Stephen at our home in White Plains and I still have great memories of a summer visit to the Gumport home on Nantucket that must have been close to fifty years ago.
