MERWIN HASKEL Obituary

HASKEL--Merwin R., Jr.,

87, passed away on December 31 with his family by his side. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Jill, sons, Brad, Bill, Jim and Tony, daughters-in-law, Amy and Annie, and grandchildren, Tommy, Jenny, Tess, Sam and Eli, and Jake who predeceased him. He also leaves behind a younger brother, Richard (Jane), niece, Patricia (Andreas), nephew, Whitlock (Lina) and their children. Merwin grew up in Scarsdale, NY, first attending the Scarsdale school system before graduating from the Salisbury School. A proud graduate of Yale University, he joined the United States Marine Corps in 1953 during the Korean War. Merwin then rose through the sales and executive ranks at United Merchants, Loomtex Corp. and Flynt Knits before forming his own company, Greenbriar Fabrics, with a trusted partner. During his career and in retirement, Merwin devoted much of his time to charity, serving on the board of the Blythedale Children's Hospital, and in various volunteer capacities at the White Plains Hospital. Merwin's greatest joys were his family and close circle of friends and he was lovingly called "Chooch," "Big Mer" and "Pops." He was a devoted and loyal husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather and friend known for filling up a room with humor and fun. An accomplished athlete, he enjoyed tennis, golf, skiing and being in the outdoors especially in his beloved Vermont. He was also a crossword puzzle aficionado, history buff and lover of anything to do with Winston Churchill. During the latter part of his life, he fought a brave and courageous battle with Alzheimer's. Even during these difficult years, Merwin was a favorite of the caregivers who looked after him. A "Celebration of Life" engagement is being planned by the family to honor and remember a remarkable man who lived life to its fullest. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to either Blythedale Children's Hospital, 95 Bradhurst Ave., Valhalla, NY 10595 or The Salisbury School, c/o MRH Scholarship Fund, 251 Canaan Road, Salisbury, CT 06068.

Dear Jill and family,
I'm so sorry to learn of Merwin's passing. Early in my career, he was the upbeat voice on the phone. Always open and sincere - someone I was always happy to hear from. He will be missed. You all have my deepest sympathy at this time.

All of us here at Klingenstein, Fields & Co. are mourning the loss of Merwin. He was a great friend of Fred Klingenstein and his wife Sharon. He was a lifelong friend to Fred who brought great joy to Fred and the entire Klingenstein Family. We all knew him as a bright light whose optimism, playfulness and sense of humor brought joy to us all. We loved discussing his many ideas with him and always enjoyed his visits to our office. We still have the company shirts and hats he obtained for us.
Along with him family, we will all miss him a great deal. He will not be forgotten. A very bright light has left us. We send our heart felt condolences to the entire Haskel family. Kenneth H. Fields

Dear Jill,
There were many things we didn't know about Mer meeting him as we did during these past years. There were wonderful qualities though that we appreciated so much - his smile was like sunshine, he knew how to have fun and was always incredibly kind.
Thinking about you and sending love. I will miss seeing you with Mer at The Ambasssdot and how sweet and loving you always were.

Merwin was lovingly devoted to his family and friends, and kept us all sharp. His warmth and humor, and intensity, endeared him to all. Commuting with Merwin was a competitive sport, me against the crossword puzzle. I'm very sad to lose him, but feel privileged to have enjoyed his friendship. My love and condolences to all his family. I miss him.
