RICHARD MORRIS Obituary

MORRIS--Richard A., 78, died at his home in Sarasota, FL, February 17th. He was a graduate of Bronx Science and Adelphi College. After retiring from the insurance business and moving to Sarasota, he began an (unpaid) career as co-founder, with his wife Sue, of the nonprofit, member-supported Sarasota Film Society. As booker, screener and distributor of classic, independent and international films, Dick was a highly visible promoter of the arts, including film, as opportunities for enlightenment as well as entertainment. Famously outspoken in his remarks on both culture and politics, Dick was admired by many as a "contrarian with a cause." He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Susan (nee Kroll) Morris, daughter Leslie (Robert) Godwin, son-in-law Steve Sam- uels, two grandchildren, many relatives and countless friends. He was predeceased in 2002 by his daughter Kathryn (KT) Samuels.

Sue and family--I am sending healing thoughts. Charming and trenchant, I enjoyed Dick's great good company and admired his passion for film--the signature artform of the 20th century. Sarasota's arts community was enriched by his contributions and generosity, as were those of us privileged to know him personally.

We have been members since inception and are so grateful for all of Dick's leadership in bringing the Film Society to Sarasota.
We have spent many happy hours in all the locations viewing the excellent films brought to us

We are overwhelmed with grief and will keep Dick in our hearts forever - grateful for the warm and generous friendship of Sue and Dick over so many years with the Rosen-Weiser family in Sarasota. And for Dick's fun teaching of how to prepare and eat fresh crab! In sadness and with love, Carla Rosen-Vacher and Dominique Vacher
