ROBERT HOGAN Obituary

HOGAN--Robert J, (Captain NYPD Ret.) age 74, passed away in Port Washington NY, on Wednesday, August 20, 2014. Bob was born in St. Catherine of Alexandria parish in Borough Park, Brooklyn. He attended high school at LaSalle Academy on East 2nd Street in Manhattan and received his B.S. from Manhattan College on a full Police Department scholarship, graduating cum laude. He also earned an MBA from Manhattan College. He joined the N.Y.C. Police Department in 1963, and was appointed by Mayor Koch to serve as an assistant commissioner in the New York City Department of Transportation. He retired from the Police Department after twenty-two years to serve as the director of Public Safety at the then newly opened Javits Convention Center on the West Side of Manhattan. He later worked as an intelligence analyst for the Drug Enforcement Administration before retiring in 2002. Bob took up the bagpipes, joining the ranks of the Pipes & Drums of the New York City Police Department Emerald Society in 1968. He served in positions of administrative and musical leadership as Bandmaster, Assistant Bandmaster, and Pipe Major. Bob is the only member of the Band to serve both as Bandmaster and Pipe Major. During his tenure as pipe major, the Band produced its first long playing album and won two consecutive Father Donal J. O'Callahan trophies as the best bagpipe band in the New York City St. Patrick's Day Parade. In 1981, while completing work on an MBA at Manhattan College, he collaborated with Brother Kenneth Fitzgerald F.S.C. and they founded the Manhattan College Pipe Band, where he served as the director for 17 years. He was directed toward law enforcement by his unofficial adopted father, Aeneas B. Neligan. In the NYPD, he served for many years as an Emerald Society Delegate and a member of the Holy Name Society. He was a contributing member to the New York Irish American Historical Society, co-founder of the Emerald Society in the New York office of the Drug Enforcement Administration, and a member of the Manhattan Division 3 - Ancient Order of Hibernians. Being civic minded and driven to be impactful locally, Bob served in elected positions as Mayor to the Village of Plandome Manor and President of the Port Washington Estates Association. He also served as a reporter for the local newspaper. Bob is survived by his wife of 52 years, Rosemary, his children, Grace, Colleen, and Michael, his Sisters, Virginia Pitsios and Margaret Dove, and six grandchildren. Visitation will be held at the New Hyde Park Funeral Home 506 Lakeville Rd. New Hyde Park NY Saturday and Sunday 2-4:30 and 7-9:30. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10am, Monday, August 25, at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City. Interment will be private. www.nhpfh.com. My deepest sympathies to the Hogan Family. Bob Hogan was a part of our family for many years and each time I think of him a smile comes to my face. I spent many years with Bob Hogan at our house in Fort Lee. My dad, Doug Connell, brought the best of the best to our house and Bob Hogan was one of them. He will be missed but never forgotten.

Dear Rosemary, Grace, Colleen, and Michael: I was very saddened to hear about Bob's death. He was a wonderful man and I made a point of chatting with him every time I was at a band function. He was one of my parents' favorite people and it was easy to see why. Bob's contributions to the band's legacy and Irish American culture are immeasurable. His book: On the Streets of New York is one of my prized possessions. My thoughts and prayers are with you and the rest of your family at this time.

Yours very sincerely,
