Fifty years ago, when we friends were all just starting out at Brown Brothers, I ran a car pool from the Columbia vicinity down to work. I piloted a '64 VW Beetle, the only car amongst us. My copilot was six-foot Charlie Foley, who went on to a great career as the top man at Estabrook. And scrunched into the back seat was impeccably dressed Steve, a true "man in a hurry," along with our back office employee, Pedro Salcedo, who later became a successful bond trader. Each passenger put up $5 per week (!!), and for those mere fifteen bucks, we parked every day on an East River pier off Wall Street and walked to old #59. (It was later to become an indoor tennis bubble). The camaraderie and good-natured kidding were great, the stop and go traffic in the summer with no a/c was not so great, but I treasure those memories to this day. I was overseas last year and only recently learned of Steve's passing, which saddened me immensely. "Such, such were the joys," as Orwell once wrote.

Dear Kim,
I am sadden to hear about the passing of Stephen.
My sincere condolence, heartfelt compassion and empathy during this time of sorrow at the loss of your beloved and precious husband.
I extend my deepest sympathies to you, your family and friends including the dogs (Bozo, Zuzu, I've not met and don't know the name of the 3rd dog). My thoughts and prayers are with you as you mourn and come to terms with Stephen's transition.
I am forever grateful for the opportunity and privilege, I had first hand to know Stephen and your gracious generosity and kindness, starting with the New York apartment house warming celebration. It was always, with pleasure to create at least one maybe two red meat food items on each individualized and personally customized cocktail or dinner menus to specifically accommodate Stephen's like for red meat.
With care and loving thoughts
I send you a big hug and kiss,
Winston
