WILLIAM LIFLAND Obituary

LIFLAND--William Thomas, 83, a leading antitrust lawyer and retired partner in the New York law firm Cahill Gordon & Reindel LLP, died peacefully on May 3, 2012 at his home near Princeton, NJ, after a long illness. To all who knew him, Bill Lifland was a gentleman and a scholar, a dry wit and a man of utmost integrity. The elder son of I. Charles and Carol Francks Lifland, he graduated from Yale College (‘49) and Harvard Law School ('52), where he was president of the Harvard Law Review. After law school, he served two years in the Air Force General Counsel's Office and a year as law clerk to U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Marshall Harlan II. He joined Cahill in 1955, practicing there until his retirement in 2002. A preeminent antitrust practitioner, he advised a diverse array of clients on all aspects of trade and competition law. He published two books on antitrust law, and wrote the New York Law Journal's monthly "Antitrust" column for 33 years. He taught antitrust law at Fordham Law School from 1981 to 2004, and served more than 30 years as an antitrust instructor for the Practicing Law Institute. In 1997 the New York State Bar Association Antitrust Section awarded him its Distinguished Service Award, and in 2007 the Section renamed the award the William T. Lifland Service Award in his honor. At home in Princeton, he enjoyed making furniture, tinkering with electronics, and developing and printing his own photographs. He was an avid reader and loved the theatre, concerts, and opera. He enjoyed playing tennis, bicycling, and traveling. A longtime member of Trinity Church, Princeton, he was a chair of the Outreach Committee and member of the Ushers' Guild. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, the former Nancy Moffat; their daughter, Carol and husband Daniel Giesberg of Los Angeles, CA; and sons, Charles and wife Alison of Pasadena, CA, Kerin of Grass Valley, CA, and David and wife Catherine Radmer of Wayland, MA; his brother, the Hon. John C. Lifland and wife Jean of Sea Girt, NJ; eleven grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Interment will be private and a memorial service will be held in the fall. In lieu of flowers, the family invites your contributions to The Hospice Memorial Fund, Princeton Healthcare System Foundation, 253 Witherspoon Street, Suite 1, Princeton, NJ 08540.
