RAPHAEL BOGUSLAV

BOGUSLAV--Raphael, of Newport, RI, died July 18, 2010 at Rhode Island Hospital as a result of a motor vehicle accident. He is survived by his former wife, Donna Boguslav of Manhattan and by Mary Ann Kesson of Portsmouth, RI, his partner of 14 years. He was born in New York City July 24, 1929 to the late Isaac and Mary Boguslav. He attended the Art Students League from the age of nine, later the High School of Music and Art and graduated from Cooper Union in 1951. He worked as a graphic designer after apprenticing with Milton Glaser. In the sixties he joined Lippincott and Margulies where he produced package designs, trademarks, and logotypes including iconic images for PPG, New York Life Insurance, Chrysler. In the late sixties he and his wife had their own graphic design firm in Manhattan. His graphic work and pen and brush lettering earned him a prominent place in the world of calligraphy and type design. He gave many workshops in calligraphy and lettering nationally and taught at Cooper Union and RISD. Equally talented musically, he was a skillful classical pianist and a distinguished guitarist and singer. He toured extensively with Harry Belafonte and with Theo Bikel, gave a solo recital at Carnegie Hall, and released two solo recordings. In the seventies he moved to Newport, RI, to pursue painting and continued work as a graphic designer. He was an ardent tennis player, a devoted reader, a brilliant conversationalist, a gourmet cook.
