LINDY HESS

HESS--Lindy. The Columbia School of Journalism mourns the loss of Lindy Hess, the director of the Columbia Publishing Course, who died on July 13 after battling cancer. Lindy Hess was the light behind 25 years of remarkable leadership for the publishing course, which started at Radcliffe. Her work led thousands of young people into book and magazine publishing careers. Many top editors in New York media outlets count her as their personal mentor. "She was fanatically dedicated to her students, not just collectively but individually," said former dean Nicholas Lemann. "Her ability to steer the publishing course was remarkable, and her reward was the pleasure of seeing generations of her students rise to leadership positions. We will miss her terribly." The school will hold a memorial in her honor in September. At the request of Lindy's husband, Dr. William Appleton, the school is establishing the "Friends of Lindy Hess Fund" to benefit scholarships for the Columbia Publishing Course.
