LEOPOLD KOSS Obituary

KOSS--Leopold. The President and Board of Trustees of Montefiore Medical Center and the entire Montefiore family are deeply saddened by the passing of our dear friend and cherished colleague, Leopold G. Koss, MD, Chairman Emeritus of the Department of Pathology of Montefiore Medical Center and Professor, Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Koss was a world-renowned physician and cytopathologist, researcher, author, teacher and mentor, whose association with Montefiore began in 1973. Always an advocate for innovation, Dr. Koss led the Department of Pathology for more than 20 years where he created an unforgettable academic legacy. He made indelible contributions to our understanding of human disease patterns, particularly in the area of gynecological pathology and trained hundreds of pathologists during his career. He was a true translational researcher before the term became popular. He would see the pathology clinically and then ask questions, design experiments and search for mechanisms. He passed this on to his trainees especially nurturing those that had, as he called it, a “fire in the belly to understand human disease by doing research. Born in Poland in 1920, he earned a medical degree at the University of Bern in Switzerland after the war and shortly thereafter came to the United States where he served at numerous prestigious medical institutions before joining Montefiore and Einstein. Our heartfelt condolences are extended to his three sons, Andrew, Michael and Richard, and his four grandchildren. Steven M. Safyer, MD President and CEO, Montefiore Medical Center Allen M. Dr. Koss was my moms mentor in cytopathology in the late fifties and sixties.

Her name was Dr. Luba Lucy Feiner.

He was like an uncle when I was young. He was very funny and as dry as his martinis.

He and his wife Lydia were frequent guests at my parents home where polish was spoken intermixed with French and English .

Lydia was elegant ,very lively and sweet.

As a resident in internal medicine, I was privileged to be his student at Montefiore around 1986 when he conducted clinical path dissections.

He was always inspiring and entertaining beyond words. No subject or morbid comment was off limits but with such cleverness.

I’m grateful for the honor of knowing Leo Koss and I remember him often❤❤❤

As he said, "I'm a doctor first, a pathologist 2nd, and lastly, a cytopathologist".
He was a great guy.

What a great physician and person. I have never forgotten Dr.Koss reminding all the pathologists attending the Chicago
Cytology Tutorial circa 1980 that "first I am a physician, then a pathologist, and lastly, a cytopathologist"

In 1976, during my stay in the Department of Pathology of the Montefiori Hospital I had the opportunity to meet a true Master. In subsequent years he honored me by his friendship even remembering me in the history of the Department. Goodbay Sir.

My condolenses to the family - so sorry to hear about your loss. Montefiore will not be the same without him. My husband often quotes him when he supported us returning to South Africa as being the only one to say it is good to swim against the tide.He was a true people's person- not just interested in the pathology, but in the people behind the specimens ...and behind the microscopes.
