1929 - 2013
John Kirby O'Loughlin, (Jack), passed away peacefully with his family at his side on January 26th at First Health Hospice in Pinehurst. A memorial service will be held at the Community Presbyterian Church of Pinehurst on Saturday, February 2 at one o'clock p.m. followed by a reception in Fellowship Hall.
Jack was born in Brooklyn, New York, on March 31, 1929 to John Francis and Nan (Kirby) O'Loughlin.
He married Janet Rutherford Tag on July 5, 1952 in Mamaroneck, New York, where they began an extraordinary partnership that flourished for over 60 years.
Jack earned a Bachelor's degree in Economics from St. Lawrence University where he led the Fighting Saints football team to an undefeated season in 1950 earning The "Big 42" a place in his college Hall of Fame.
Upon graduation his love of Country inspired him to enlist in the United States Marine Corps where he rose to the rank of Captain.
Jack had an exceptional 32 year career with the Allstate Insurance Company retiring as Senior Executive Vice President.
The O'Loughlins enjoyed living in Lake Forest, Illinois for 27 years before moving to Pinehurst in 1999.
Dedicated to providing opportunity for others, Jack gave graciously of his time, talents and treasure to the people and causes in which he believed. These included the USMC Scholarship Foundation in Chicago and The Tin Whistles Education and Research Foundation.
In addition, Jack was a trustee on the board of his alma mater for many years.
Jack's tenure as President of the Marine Corps University Foundation in Quantico, Virginia was especially meaningful to him.
Jack's faith was an integral part of his life. He loved worshiping with his family and rarely missed a Sunday.
He is survived by his loving wife Janet, to whom he was endlessly devoted.
His children, Robert (Laurie), Steven (Sarah), Pat (Dave Cameron) and John (Kelly) respected and admired him.
"Grandpa O," had a very special place in his heart for each of his grandkids: Brendan, Sean, Erin, Brian, Michael (Janna), Kate (Quinn Orb), Annie, Carly, John, Kirby, and Molly and his great grandson Jaxon.
And of course, his beloved Shannon. Woof
Jack touched the life of everyone he met with his twinkling eyes, warm smile and friendly demeanor.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested donations in his name be made to Community Presbyterian Church, the Tin Whistles Education and Research Foundation or First Health Hospice House ( 251 Campground Rd. Pinehurst, NC 28374).
