Peter Ourusoff Obituary

1940 - 2013
Peter Ourusoff, teacher, naturalist and nature safari guide for over forty-five years, died Feb. 3 at his home in Graton, California, after a short illness. He was 73 years old.
Born in Washington, D.C., he was the son of Leonid Ourusoff, a Russian prince who immigrated to the United States after the 1917 Russian Revolution and Katherine Carlisle of Washington, D.C. He was educated at St. Albans School, Cornell, Boston University and Harvard Graduate School of Education. His boyhood interest in bird-watching deepened into a passion for learning and teaching about the natural world. He worked at Drumlin Farm for the Massachusetts Audubon Society in 1959.
Beasts of all kinds trusted him. A pet raccoon scurried busily about an early apartment. A huge snowy owl, wounded by birdshot, sat peacefully on his arm. During his early years as a biology teacher in Lexington, Mass., he led a summer bird-watching trek to the American west. This informal expedition turned out to be a model for the rest of his working life. As a guide for the Bay Area firm Mountain Travel for over 20 years (1979-2001), he went on to lead sightseeing safaris to Kenya's great rift valley, north Tanzania's Serengeti Plain, the mountains of Rwanda, and beyond Africa, to Hawaii, Antarctica, Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Central Asia and Arctic Russia. There were adventures. Once, halfway through a boat tour of Lake Baikal, the boat's engine died. Silence. Worried looks. But Peter life-rafted his guests ashore, discovered a small Siberian village, introduced himself in Russian to the townspeople, and sang Russian folk songs for the congregation. Eventually, a rescue boat appeared.
Ourusoff (he spelled it "Urusov" in later years), who later affirmed his gay orientation, left the Northeast U.S. and adventured out to the Bay area in 1969, spending the next two years helping to establish an alternative high school in Richmond. He then worked as a naturalist for the East Bay Regional Park District.
He found a modest two-acre property in Graton. He decreed "Peter's place": two rental units and a small house, sheep and goats, a 3/4 acre vineyard, a lap pool, and extensive horticulture. It was a refuge. Friends came. Family came. In the few days before his death, they came in numbers, and organized schedules for his care, food, 24-hour nursing, and exercise for Rafiki, Peter's beloved black dog. "Rafiki" means "friend" in Swahili.
Peter nursed injured animals and dying friends, rode in bikeathons for AIDS victims, supported charities (favorites included The Nature Conservancy and Doctors without Borders). Friends knew him as a welcoming host, loved his joyful, kind, adventurous spirit, and will continue to be inspired by his passionate concern for human rights and the environment.
He is survived by his sister Olga Skow, brothers Nick, Ivan and Sergei; seven nieces and nephews; and nine grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
Remembrance ceremonies are planned at the family summer home in New London, NH during August and during the summer in California.

I'm now a 70-year-old man but still have fond memories of Peter from 57 years ago when I, and my friends, precocious 7th graders at the Belmont Junior High, had him as our science teacher trying to figure out why, when we poured different liquids from a beaker, the fluid stream would break apart at different heights. That summer I traveled with Peter, his guitar, and several other kids up the Gaspe Peninsula to Bonaventure Island and Perce Rock to camp for awhile, visit the bird sanctuary, and just horse around. I made a second trip with Peter that summer to Baxter State Park where we camped at a mountain lake, dealt with an aggressive moose and climbed Katadan, including the Knife Edge. On one of those trips we spent the night sleeping in the boathouse at the family compound and tipping canoes. At some point my parents had Peter and at least one brother over to our house for dinner. Recognizing the family connection, our Siberian Huskey (Kolya) lifted his leg and peed on the brother, something he had never done before and never did again. I have such vivid memories of all these experiences - a true gift from Peter. I only wish I had looked him up after his move to SF. Condolences to all.

I met Peter in Antarctica when he guided a Mountain Travel trip in 1997! A wonderful guy, warm & personable, really made the trip truly memorable! It was a real pleasure knowing Peter & I was very happy to later meet up with him again at his house here in northern CA along with my wife Cathy Ann!

Just discovered this after my wife and I talked about our trip to Tanzania with Peter and Mountain Travel back in the 1980's. What a wonderful guy. He did so much to introduce a couple of youngsters to the world of adventure travel.

I recall him saying that he would like to camp alone on the Serengeti. After seeing so many lions, etc, I can't say that we shared his enthusiasm. But certainly admired him for it ;+}.

Enjoyed meeting Peter "many" years ago (1998) while thinking about the potential for 'ecotourism' in sonoma county. He became interested in LandPaths' work early on and encouraged me on various fronts. A lovely human being and a fine naturalist. RIP Peter

Much too late to be read at all, but I have to say a brief thanks to Peter's memory, I roomed at Eliot House in 1960-61 with his friends Johnny Boyd and Jonathan Roosevelt, and we were soon joined by Peter's raccoon. It nipped but never injured us, and Peter was one of the dearest sweetest people I have ever known.

Dear Orusoff Family, Iamm so sorry to learn of Peter's passing. He took me on a trip with 2 other boys in 1962. I have the fondest memories of that trip and of Peter. Unfortunately for me I did not keep in touch and just decided to google him and his obituary came up. I am so glad to read about him and his love of animals and the environment. He awakened those interests in me and they are my guiding principles. Bless you Peter. Alex

Peter, Peter, how many wonderful years it's been since we first met in Kenya in '87, birded the Amazon and Pantanal, planted your vineyard, camped at Chaco, hiked, cooked, laughed, and enjoyed your presence so much that you seemed to be always with us. Now, an overwhelming sense of loss, but memories that will endure forever.

Finally becoming un-numb enough from the loss of a dear, dear friend to be able to try to say how saddened I am for the all-too-sudden departure of Peter. He was a light in my life and I miss his laughter, warmth, insights, and friendship.

Dear Peter,
I remember your wonderful hospitality and all the bicycling we did in preparation for the Aids Ride in the mid-90s. I was just thinking about you in the last month and hoping we could get together again. I guess that will have to be in the next life.
You will be missed a lot.

My first experience with Peter was when he took me horseback riding in the East Bay hills in the 70s. I was wide eyed as he knew all of the birds, their call, and how to communicate with them. Peter's open heart, jovial spirit, passion for adventure and enthusisam for all that life has to offer will be missed by all who knew him.

Our deepest condolences to Peter's family and friends. We feel your loss too, here in the UK. How we will miss our lunches at Peter's Place and our 'guided walks' at Bodega Bay on our visits with Ross, Ann Marie and Hugh. This man leaves a enormous hole in the lives of those he touched - such grace, such generosity and such love he shared with so many. RIP Peter. With love from The Battersby Family in the London, England.

I am greatly saddened by Peter's passing. Having been connected with Peter & the Ourusoff family for close to 50 years it's hard to believe that I will not be seeing Peter on his trips back east. I will always cherish my early life spending time in wayland, New London, & Cambridge. Peter had a great spirit for life I truely will miss! I am thankful that my 3 kids were able to meet Peter in California and Boston.

Peter had a gift for friendship. Each of us felt especially loved, and loved him in return. Generous with his time and talents, his home, table and love of the natural world, he was the heart and soul of wide ranging circle. We miss him collectively and individually. I am deeply grateful for Peter's many contributions to my life, particularly the birds and the Joy of living.

Let me be grateful to people who make my family, including our animals, and me happy. People like Peter are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom. Thank you Peter! Peter was one of the first people we met after moving to California, making my soul blossom since it experienced a lot of hardship at the beginning of our time here in Sonoma Wine Country.
You introduced us the the "Sound of Music" which I appreciate almost on a daily basis making me less homesick for Austria. The dogs, horse and us will miss running into you and Rafiki on a weekly basis. Remember, Suess, the flat coated retriever, had her first and last love affair with Rafiki.....
California will not be the same without you, but you will be in our hearts for ever! Thank you, Peter!

Peter was an inspiration - he knew how to love and how to live in the moment. My boys both took to him immediately. Jackson shared Peter's love of birds (and loves two bird books Peter gave him). James (in picture) smiled at Peter.

1966 Folk Club, Belmont, Massachusetts. All the girls had a crush on you including me. You said we could call you Peter after graduation, and what a chorus we made, calling "Peter, Peter, Peter!" You were a radiant light. I'm grateful that you shone in my life.

Our condolences to the Ourusoff family for the loss of Peters' bright warm light. We feel fortunate to have spent a riotuous evening with him at our campsite in South Padre Island after a chance remark led to the discovery that we were newly related by marriage.

You were one of the best teachers I ever had. You made high school biology interesting for a "non science oriented" person. You helped us form a "Folk Club" and sat around and played your guitar and sang Phil Ochs, Dylan, and Joan Baez songs with us in your free time. I am so glad that through a six degrees of separation type thing our paths crossed again a few years ago here in NH. It was wonderful seeing you again after all those years. You were a true gem and such a positive influence on my life. Thank you.
