JOHN NEU Obituary

NEU--John L. We are deeply saddened by the sudden death of John L. Neu, our esteemed Chairman. A brilliant businessman, philanthropist, environmentalist, animal rights and community activist, politically engaged citizen and voracious reader with an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. John was associated with Hugo Neu Corporation for 50 years after graduating with honors from Harvard Law School. Initially working at the side of his beloved father, the late Hugo Neu, a pioneering visionary in the international metals recycling business, John assumed the leadership of the company in the early 1980's. Through hard work and determination, deliberative and wise decision making, excellent market judgment and dedication to initiating “best practices in scrap metal operations, and with active assistance and encouragement from his dear wife and our CEO, Wendy Kelman Neu, John grew the business and brought Hugo Neu Corporation to an unparalleled position in the international metals recycling industry as one of its largest, most profitable and respected members. On a more personal note, we will remember John for his wisdom, gentleness, honesty, intellectual rigor, strength of character and frequent unstinting efforts and generosity on behalf of people less fortunate. Most recently, John and Wendy spent days serving meals on site to the victims of Superstorm Sandy and petitioning governmental leaders to take more rapid action. We extend our sincere condolences to Wendy, all of the members of John and Wendy's immediate and extended family, including his adored Luke, as well as his wide circle of friends. John was half of the kindest couple, both able to see what is important in life. What more can be said except we wish those with no heart would depart, and those with a big heart would still be with us.

Remembering John stroking a rescued beloved dog's head as he sat at the table and we talked about politics and the prospects for animal legislation. We send our love to his wife, Wendy on this day of remembrance.

John's kindness was apparent in his very features, in his soft voice, in his act of bending down to touch the dog under the conference table, and in his partnership in compassion with his wife, Wendy. Animals need all the friends they can get, and John was an upstanding, decent, and intelligent person who understood what is right and just, as does Wendy Neu, his soulmate, in his memory. I am one of those fortunate ones who have shared that honor to know you and be inspired by you. Your physical being may not be here but be sure that who you are will always be remembered. I can still remember speaking by phone to John and then in person when he climbed the 56 or so steps to my top floor office at The Hudson School . He was seeking advice about a neighborhood child who he believe would benefit from educational support. He wanted to help the child who wasn't reading on grade level. He wanted to find the right school for him because he felt the public schools in our town were not working for this little boy. He thought the child might have dyslexia, as i recall. I made some suggestions. Our friendship began that day. John and Wendy then became supporters of more children who needed financial scholarships to attend the independent school i had founded that had a need-bind admissions policy. John would drop off a check before the winter break each year for the scholarship fund. John saw the possibilities in everyone and wanted to play a role in helping them fulfill their potentialities. That's who John was and he continues to inspire me. I honor him by trying to carry on his vision.

John, it's hard to believe that it's been 6 years since we lost you. I feel like I grew up with you in the company and that you always had my back. Over the years our family watched you evolve from an energetic young businessman to a world class business leader and philanthropist. Whatever success I've achieved I owe to you and Uncle Hugo for giving me my opportunity of a lifetime. Thank you for that and wherever you are, please know that your memory is also a blessing to so many others.

My deepest sympathy to Wendy and family, Hugo Neu, and to all who are saddened by John's sudden passing. John was a man who willingly offered his intelligence, experience, and compassion to help so many. Those of us who have been graced by meeting John will always remember his kindness and determination.

March 15, 2013

I wish to extend my deepest, heartfelt condolences to Wendy, the extended Neu family, Irma and all at the Hugo Neu Corporation.

John was my Chairman. He was a visionary leader whose unwavering commitment to excellence characterized not only his business success but also his engagement in humanitarian and environmental endeavors.

Over time, John became my valued mentor and my trusted friend. By constantly challenging me, he taught me so much of his business acumen and how that impacted his philanthropic goals of providing opportunities for growth to those less fortunate than he. It was an honor to know and work for/with John. He was a man with great passion for life, who was willing to pursue his dreams of making the world a better place.

I was not ready to say goodbye
Your disease just over took
So on this day we remember you
I take a second look

Our friendship is forever
Until death did we part
Although your are away physically
You are always in my heart

- Kim Thompson

A great man has left us. John's legacy will live on as we honor him daily in the way we strive to live our lives by his measures of excellence and compassion.

John, You will missed more than words can say. Your advise, warmth and gentle way will forever live in the hearts of all those who knew and loved you. In times like these I am reminded that death ends a life but not a relationship. The relationships of all those whom you touched will live on forever. I am going to plant a tree at the farm, the Triple C Ranch (triplecranch.org) as living memorial to you and your friendship. I am also going to buy a bench and put it under that tree with your name and a few words about the incredible way you touched all those who were blessed to have known you.

Wendy, it started quite simply with with a phone call on behalf of one youngster who needed help. Then, each December, unannounced, John would climb 76 steps to my temporaray office on the top floor of our local library and place a check on my desk for a deserving child in need of tuition support. He not only continued to provide financial aid over many years but helped us build a permanent home for The Hudson School. His legacy will live on in our hearts and in the contributions our graduates are making to pay his gift forward by building a more civil, healthier and compassionate world. He will be missed and his memory an inspiration to those of us who had the great honor to know him.
