JOHN YOUNG Obituary

YOUNG--John E. died April 1, 2013 at his home in Manhattan, surrounded by his loving wife Mary and family, of complications from Parkinson's Disease. John was born in 1935 in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Russell E. and Frances Young and grew up in Casper, Wyoming where he was graduated from Natrona County High School in 1952. John went on to receive his undergraduate degree at the California Institute of Technology (CalTech) and law degree magna cum laude in 1959 from Harvard Law School where he was a member of the Law Review. He spent most of the year following graduation from law school traveling the world on a Sheldon Traveling Fellowship from Harvard. Upon his return, John joined the law firm Cravath, Swaine & Moore in New York where he became a partner on January 1, 1968 and had a diverse corporate practice, principally in the areas of securities offerings and private financings, both domestic and international. John was a recognized expert in representing underwriters and issuers in public debt and equity offerings, as well as institutional investors in railroad equipment financings. He headed Cravath's Paris office in 1971-1973 and its London office in 1990-1995, when he retired from the Firm. John served as a trustee of the Brearley School and the National Young Arts Foundation and was chairman of the Royal Oak Foundation, the United States arm of the National Trust of England, Wales and Northern Ireland, a conservation foundation, among his many charitable endeavors. John read avidly and widely. He loved travel, classical music and art. In retirement, John took up boating and with his wife Mary and many friends cruised the Erie Canal, the Florida Keys and the Intracoastal Waterway on his boat "Mobius." John was also a life-long progressive, beginning with his support, while a young man, for Adlai Stevenson and ending with his joy at being able to witness the election of Barack Obama. John was an extraordinarily generous man who cared deeply about his friends and family. In addition to his wife of 46 years, Mary, he is survived by his daughter Cynthia Young (George Eberstadt) and her daughters Esme and Maya, his daughter Abigail Young (Jonathan Moses), and her daughters Charlotte and Eleanor, and his sister-in-law Joan Nason. We will miss him deeply. Donations in John's memory may be made to the Mt. Sinai Visiting Doctor's Service, which provided him such compassionate care, or the Metropolitan Museum of Art or Museum of Modern Art, both of which John frequently visited in his later years taking part in their wonderful programs for people suffering from illnesses such as his. A memorial service will take place on Tuesday, April 9 at 11am at The Church of the Heavenly Rest in Manhattan.

I've known John since he was in Blacker House at Caltech and drove back to New York with him. Great traveling companion and a good guy.

He was one of the loveliest, most kind and generous men and it was a pleasure to have been the board of the Royal Oak Foundation with him. I work for Westminster Abbey and a candle will be lit for him today.

As a childhood friend and neighbor, John was always recognized by us as being brilliant, capable, and modest. Always at the top of our class, he represented us outstandingly at that time and in all the years that followed. EVE EVERETT FISH (NCHS '52)

Mary, I am so sorry to hear about John's passing; however, I am glad he was able to enjoy art at the Met until the very end! His love for art and music was always evident. Peace to you and your family, and John's professional caregivers. Sincerely, Christena Gunther
