MARY SIMONS

SIMONS--Mary. We mourn the passing of Mary Simons, 82, of New York City, Mill River Massachusetts, and Orvieto, Italy. Her life ended peacefully and with dignity, on February 19th, surrounded by her family. She had battled Leukemia for 20 years. Born in Arlington, Massachusetts. She was a 1953 graduate of Wellesley College. Mary went on to have an accomplished career as an award winning journalist, foreign correspondent and editor at Interiors, Look, and Life magazines. She was also the first female Senior Editor of The New York Times Sunday Magazine and Editor in Chief of Food & Wine Magazine. Her work focused on the arts and other cultural areas. In addition to her homes in New York City and Massachusetts, Mary lived for many years with her family in Europe and Asia. After retirement, she continued to pursue her love for travel, gardening and the arts. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Walter, her two daughters, Alexandra Houston and Hilary Simons, and six grandchildren. Mary was a person of great strength and generosity. We will remember her intellectual prowess, culinary skills, and her love of aesthetic beauty. She was deeply engaged in life; she wanted to experience and share it all. We will miss forever her presence in our lives. Donations in Mary's memory can be made to the Southern Poverty Law Center, and the Special Olympics.
