CHARLES BATES Obituary

BATES--Charles Turner, age 82, of Irvington, NY and Clinton, CT, died of natural causes on August 1, 2014. Charlie was born in Tarrytown, NY to Harry Cole and Helen Turner Bates. Charlie attended Hackley School in Tarrytown and graduated from Hamilton College in 1953. After college he served two years in the United States Army's Ordnance Corps, serving as a translator in France. He graduated from Yale Law School in 1958, and began his legal career at Townley & Updike in New York. Charlie joined the law department at CBS in 1969, rising to the level of Secretary of CBS. Upon retiring in 1988, Charlie embarked on a second career, teaching high school level U.S. History at his alma mater, Hackley. With his second retirement in 1999, he stayed active with travel to all parts of the globe, and volunteering at the Irvington Historical Society and The Church of St. Barnabas, where Charlie, a lifelong member, sang in the choir from childhood until this year. He is survived by his brother, Robert P. Turner of Weston, CT, and eight nieces and nephews, who will miss his wide ranging knowledge and wit, including his clever predictions of next season's events on Downton Abbey. He was predeceased by his brothers David and Harry Bates, also Hackley and Hamilton alumni. A memorial service will be held at St. Barnabas, 15 N Broadway, Irvington, on Friday, August 15 at 11am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Hackley School or The Church of St. Barnabas, Irvington, NY.
