JANE BOUTWELL Obituary

BOUTWELL--Jane P., age 86, who was born in Washington, DC but lived her adult life in New York City, died October 3, 2014 in Springfield, VA, shortly after moving from her home in Brooklyn Heights. She suffered from dementia. Her parents were William D. and Olga H. Boutwell. Jane graduated from Western High School in Washington, DC and then went to the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she received her BA in history. Her first job was with Henry Luce's "The March of Time." She then entered the Foreign Service and was posted to Italy for four years. In 1961, she started work at The New Yorker Magazine where she wrote for Talk of the Town and had a specialty in music, art and ballet. Jane is survived by a number of cousins and many friends. As she wished, Jane will be cremated and her ashes taken to her beloved Fire Island. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her name to the Metropolitan Opera. A memorial will be held starting at 5pm on November 15th.

I always enjoyed hearing cousin Jane talk about her travels. As a teenager I was fortunate to be able to visit her at Fire Island and in Brooklyn.

Jane was a fine NYer colleague and also ran a cat adoption agency out of her Greenwich Village apt. years ago. We were fortunate enough to adopt one of the cats, born in the basement of her building, and enjoyed him for fourteen years.
