Dear Wendy, I'm sorry to have learned so belated of Richard's death. I knew him at Yale, where the words lively, curious, and irrepressible would only begin to describe him. He shall be missed.

Dear Wendy, I never had the pleasure or the privilege of meeting you or the boys, but I almost felt I had, the way Richard talked about all of you. I met Richard maybe ten years ago as a fellow Mellon Scholar. I always looked forward to discussing music, politics, and family at every Mellon reunion (we shared only two out of three!), and, well, he was simply an amazing person. I would walk away from every encounter reminded that it was my gift and responsibility to live a fully human life.

As you may or may not know I have known Richard for over 20 years as an antiquarian dealer who had the enormous pleasure of helping Richard build his own personal collection. He was my absolutely favourite client and I shall miss our conversations about music, life and politics. My heart goes out to you and your family. He used to talk so proudly of you all.

Wendy- Richard was my predecessor and mentor at University School NEWS. He taught me about rigor and deadlines and the importance of keeping your word. We collaborated as friends and then I carried on as Editor-in-Chief when he left for Yale. He always had a wry smile that suggested he understood many things the rest of us would never know. I will always remember him for the excellent example he set for me in school and beyond. I share my deepest condolences.

Dear Wendy,
I am adding my voice to those who knew Richard and whose lives were enriched by his kind presence. We were friends at Yale, and shared Cleveland roots, played music together in the Yale orchestra, and would meet at reunions, including a Yale orchestra reunion. He was generous with his warmth, kindness, and humor. I will miss him, and send my feelings of sympathy and support to you and your family.

Richard was a special friend. That's about it. We knew each other in high school and college, where impressions formed and stuck. Perhaps my fondest memory was of Richard as our swim team manager at University School. Although never in the pool, Richard knew all of our best times, and quietly, almost impishly, would remind us of the times we needed to hit, just to get a little better, before our big races. How he could keep all these seemingly meaningless numbers in his head amazed me, until I realized that the real reason he did all that: he cared deeply for us, our team, and what we could do together. Richard lived his life fully because he did care so much.

My deepest condolences to Wendy, Isaac and Noah. It seems like yesterday when Richard spoke with me with pride and excitement about the accomplishments of his young boys, as well as his devotion for Wendy. In many ways, I patterned my own young fatherhood 20 years ago after his love and commitment to his family. He was a great mentor to me, and later, a great friend. I'll miss him deeply.

I remember. Always. Sic transit gloria mundi. Yet the deeds one does must echo through eternity until judgment.
To his family, I can say:
"May the Lord bless you and keep you;
May the Lord make his face to shine upon you;
and be gracious to you;
May the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace."
