Hilail's life stands as the most inconspicuous and yet telling sign of eternal.

Hilail was a genuine thinker and speaker for and beyond all times. One truly liberating teacher, Hilail lived and invited us to live at the heart of all things that matter, without ever foresaking their surface. He knew how to best draw his interlocutors to recognize silence as the true shelter of the understanding, even as we need special spoken guidance to access the eternal shelter; even as eternity turns out to be the thinking spring of all genuine speech. May we continue being nourished by his example and hidden presence!

Hilail's visits to San Francisco were anticipated by all of us who met him through his long friendship with Perri Hale. We knew we would enjoy new restaurants, good wine, lovely trips to the country and lots of lively conversation with a truly cultured man of wit and wide-ranging curiosity. Que en paz descanse

Hilail Gildin was an exemplary practitioner of the Socratic dialogue, as well as a very good human being, and a great friend. He will be hugely missed.
