JOHN LARAGH Obituary

LARAGH--John H. MD. The Hypertension Center at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center mourns the loss of our founder and mentor John H. Laragh, MD. Dr. Laragh started the Hypertension Center in the 1970's. He was a true pioneer in the field; his passion for exploring and understanding the mechanisms of hypertension resulted in brilliant clinical investigations and development of a paradigm for treatment that remains relevant, useful and innovative even today. He loved medicine and his patients and they admired and loved him in return. His original discovery of the role of aldosterone in malignant hypertension led to an understanding of the important role of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system in hypertension, and ultimately, to the discovery of drugs that block the system and are used widely today to treat not only hypertension but also heart disease and kidney disease. His curiosity, command of the literature, and his innovative thinking of hypertension as a heterogeneous condition that requires individualized treatment presaged the advent of precision medicine by decades. We are grateful to have had the opportunity to work with him and we miss his brilliance, humor and creativity. We extend our deepest sympathy to his wife Dr. Jean Sealey, his sons John and Robert, his daughter-in- law Marci, and granddaughter Eliana.

Dear Dr. Sealy and family it was my great privilege to have collaborated with Dr. L over many years with several pharmaceutical research oriented firms. We shared many good times with he and you as well. The very best, other then learning from this wonderful gifted gentlemen was being able to tee it up John and Rob at Doral. May God Bless you and yours.

My deepest condolences to Dr. Laragh's family and friends. He was a great man who accomplished so much in his life. Regardless of the heights he reached in his career, it was the care that he took with his patients and his friends that I will most remember. When I was a young woman, I was involved in a terrible auto accident. Dr. Laragh was not my doctor, but he helped to arrange for my care. Then he visited me nearly every day in the hospital for nine months. I will never forget him and his kindness to me and to my family. May he rest in peace.

Dear Jean, I was very sad to read of John's passing. He was truly a remarkable human being as well as a wonderful physician and pioneer in hypertension research and medicine. I considered it an honor to have met and worked with him in the very early days of the ASH.

He will truly be missed.
