DONALD SHACK Obituary

SHACK--Donald.

Died peacefully at home on July 12, 2015, after a short illness, at the age of 86, surrounded by his family. Donald graduated Williams College (Phi Beta Kappa) and Harvard Law School before serving in the Korean War. For more than 60 years he had a distinguished career practicing law in New York City as the managing partner of Golenbock and Barell, a founding partner of Shack, Siegel, Katz & Flaherty, and a partner of Blank Rome. Donald was an indispensable adviser to his clients, many of whom became life-long friends. Actively involved for years in the New York Civil Liberties Union, Donald was a champion of the underdog. Born and raised in Brooklyn, he was heart-broken when his Dodgers moved west but quickly shifted his "wait until next year" brand of fandom to the Mets, who, like the bums before, rarely exceeded his expectations. Donald loved tennis, sailing, and swimming, lively conversation, theater, music, good books, good food, and good Scotch. Yet Donald was most of all devoted to his family. He lost his loving wife of 61 years, Barbara, barely a month ago. Donald was a rock in the lives of his children, David and Laura, a beacon for his grandchildren Nicole, Joseph, and Francesca, to whom he was affectionately known as Papa, and looked forward to providing direction to his great-grand-children, Emma and Olivia. We will miss his penetrating mind, his social conscience, his deep love for his family, and his loyalty to his friends. A memorial service will be held at Plaza Jewish Community Chapel, 630 Amsterdam Ave., New York, NY 10024 on Sunday, July 26, 2015 at 4:00pm. The family will be at Donald and Barbara's home at 7 West 81st Street on Sunday, July 26th and Monday, July 27th 6-8pm. Contributions may be made in Donald's memory to The American Civil Liberties Union.

I am a Williams alum from the Class of 1948, and have fond memories of my friend Don Shack.
We lost touch many years ago. While my home was Pittsburgh when I was at Williams, my wife Judy and I bought a tiny condo in Williamstown in 1976 and spent summers there until we sold the condo in 2014.
I learned about Don's death from the College, and was surprised that the obit which I looked up on the web was in the Pittfield Berkshire Eagle. DID YOUR DAD AND LATE MOM HAVE A SUMMER PLACE IN THE BERKSHIRES?
Please be aware that I thought of your Dad as a close friend while we were at Williams.
My memory is fading, but I believe Don and I got together during years 1967-87 when I was a partner in the accounting firm, then Price Waterhouse,in the NY office.
I offer you condolences, and, like my happy memory of Don, I hope your fond memory of your Dad will wipe away your sadness.
