Richard Sens Obituary

Richard Sens, a Bronx-born, Harvard-educated psychiatrist and a mainstay in the Boston mental health community whose 50 year-career was marked by a singular generosity, died on Nov. 20, 2015 at the age of 80. The cause of death was complications from kidney failure.
The son of an egg salesman, Dr. Sens was born and raised in the Bronx, New York where he attended the city's storied DeWitt Clinton High School. He graduated from Harvard University in 1956, and returned to New York to earn his medical degree at the Albert Einstein School of Medicine with a residency in child psychology at Beth Israel Hospital. After serving in the Navy during the Korean War, he returned to Boston in 1964 and began a career as a psychiatrist and teacher – first as a resident at Harvard's McLean Hospital and later on the faculties of Harvard Medical School and the Boston Psychoanalytic Institute. During the 1970s and '80s he maintained a private practice in Brookline and Cambridge, specializing in child psychiatry. Troubled by the changes within the health-care industry during the 1990s, he worked as a clinician in Fall River serving a community hard hit by poverty and drug addiction.
Dr. Sens's career was distinguished by compassion and magnanimity for those most in need. As a clinician, he often treated patients irrespective of their ability to pay. Even as his own health declined, he remained unwavering in his commitment to his patients, keenly aware that he was frequently their only source of support. Many credited him with saving their lives.
He was a great lover of books, jazz and baseball. Despite being born and raised in New York, Dr. Sens was a faithful Red Sox fan who called Harvard Square home for most of his adult life. His connection to the neighborhood reached back to the 1950s, when as an undergraduate at Harvard, he worked as an usher at the Brattle Theatre to help pay his tuition. A fan of Humphrey Bogart, he helped persuade the theater's operators to screen Casablanca and The Maltese Falcon during final exams. The screenings became a tradition that gave rise to a cult of Bogart that remains alive at the Brattle today.
Dr. Sens is survived by his wife, Linda; two children from a previous marriage, Joshua and Alexander; his sister, Brenda; and four grandchildren, Emilia, Jonah, Scarlett and Leo. He will be deeply missed by his family, his many friends and the patients whose lives he touched.

I was a patient of Dr. Sens. I had been referred to him in the context of my interest in becoming a psychoanalyst. The plan was for me to start in once weekly psychotherapy and gradually move on into a training analysis. He was on the faculty of both psychoanalytic institutes at the time. I was referred to him, in part, due to his iconoclastic nature. During the course of my treatment, he resigned from those institutes. In the process of disclosing this to me, he gave me a set of 4 or 5 books that provided an overview of psychoanalysis. In line with the other memories shared here, he stood out as being heartfelt and very "real." I was born in the Bronx, was a psychiatric resident and fellow at Harvard. I did not know his background, understandably, at the time. However, I can see how this helped in connecting with him. He greatly encouraged me to discover who I was and be increasingly true to that. He was a great role model and mightily intelligent and intellectually curious.

I was the patient of Dr. Sens and he was the greatest doctor of all times, he has saved my life due to my mental condition He was an awesome doctor. He wasn´t the type of doctor just to write his prescription and send you on your way. He was a doctor to sit in his seat and listen to you no Matter long that your problems of your conversation was he would sit there and listen, and he made sure the prescriptions that he was giving you would help your diagnosis and he would get down to the problem so ideally miss him and there is no doctor that will ever be like him he is one of a kind and he was sadly and will be sadly missed,,,, my condolences go out to his family my deepest sympathy you weren´t just my doctor. You´re also my best friend and you were a great listener. You´re patient Steve.

He was a very, very great doctor for hearing and helping me with my health in my mental condition, I owe my life to Dr. Sands because he was the greatest doctor of all times. He was the kind of doctor that would sit in his office with your appointment time and day and listen no matter what you had to say and how long it was he would not rush you out of the office and he did make sure that he would get you on the right medication and he was a very concerned doctor about your health I miss your doctor sens may you rest in peace.
