DONALD MEYERS Obituary

MEYERS--Donald I.

Dr. Donald I. Meyers, a leader of the post-war generation of American psychoanalysts, renowned teacher and therapist, and beloved husband, father and grandfather, died on January 13, 2016. An exceptional researcher, teacher and doctor, Don, in loving partnership with his wife of 49 years, Helen, was an influential presence in the psychoanalytic world and a mentor to generations of psychiatrists and psychoanalysts. He was an accomplished therapist, specializing in child analysis, with one of the best reputations in NYC and around the world. As a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Training & Supervising Psychoanalyst, he was a pillar of the Columbia Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research, Don had a significant impact on American psychoanalysis through his leadership at the American Psychoanalytic Association, where he opened the Association to a broader and more inclusive spectrum of ideas and practitioners. His academic work was in child psychiatry and child analysis. He was Director of Experimental Psychiatry at the Henry Ittleson Center for Child Research. Don was a loving husband, father, uncle and grandfather, and a beloved, loyal friend. He was devoted to his wife, Helen, who passed in 2010. He was universally loved for his sweet demeanor, generous spirit, silent strength, mischievous humor, encyclopedic musical knowledge, and uncommon empathy. All who knew him found understanding and comfort in his embrace. As a good friend has said, Don was all love. He is survived by his son Andrew, partner Fronda, sister Pat, granddaughters Rennie and Maddie, and nieces and nephews Erica, Lizzie, Jonathan, Peter, Ann, Skip, Janice, Sandy, Ken, Benjy, Susie and Judy. Services will be held at the Frank E. Campbell Funeral Home at 11:30am on Monday, January 25th. Donations may be sent to the APA Helen Meyers Traveling Scholar Committee, 309 East 49th St, NY, NY 10017.
