RANDY JONES Obituary

JONES--Randy.

British-born, New York Citybased drummer Randy Jones passed away in Calvary Hospital on Monday, June 13, 2016, of heart failure. Known as one of the most versatile drummers of his time, he was 72 years old. Randy began as a drummer in an English rock-and-roll band and became a session drummer in London before joining the Maynard Ferguson Big Band. He came to the United States in 1972, and was soon recognized for his work with such noted jazz greats as Chet Baker, Gerry Mulligan and Bill Watrous. In 1978 he joined the Dave Brubeck Quartet, with which he toured and recorded for more than three decades. Randy was a passionate collector of classical records, and his drum solos reflected that interest. He is survived by his son, Thad Jones; grandsons Bryce and Peyton Jones; sister, Christine Wickham-Jones; and former wife and close friend, Laurie Beckelman. A memorial service will be held in the fall.

I got to know Randy through Laurie. He was very funny, so laughter was always part of the picture. He was charming in a slightly ironic way. He twinkled. And he had great tolerance of good-willed friends of Laurie's making inquiries about the life of music; I should know. Several times i various cities where he way playing, sometimes with Laurie along, sometimes not, I was invited to join him and his colleagues before or after the show bar talk, always easy and gentle and fun. For me a window into a unique life so different from mine. Randy was a lovely person. I'll continue to think of him as I have known him, as will all his friends and i that way he'll live on, as well as through his music.

My sympathy to the family, friends, and fans of Mr. Jones. I just recently "discovered" him while listening to one of the later recordings from Dave Brubeck. I was just starting to search and learn more about him and was saddened to see of his passing. He had amazing talent. May God bless and comfort you all.

Randy was my friend. He will always be in my heart .My late husband always said 'he is my best friend and one of the few people I always can talk to. We are alike'. They both loved music and drumming. Randy Jones was the best drummer of all .I will miss his humor and our calls. My heart goes out to his family and Laurie.
