RICHARD KRINSLEY Obituary

KRINSLEY--Richard,

86, died peacefully, surrounded by family, on July 28 after a brief illness following a one year bout with multiple myeloma. Mr. Krinsley's influential publishing career began at Simon & Schuster's Golden Books as an assistant salesman in the Chicago region. He was subsequently hired by Random House in 1956 as Assistant Sales Manager and, under Bennett Cerf's guidance, he became the youngest Corporate Vice President in the company's history, at the age of 34. He subsequently was promoted to Executive Vice President, Sales and Marketing, and President of the Children's Group. In this capacity he developed notable authors and franchises including Theodore Geisel's Dr. Suess, Roald Dahl, the Berenstain Bears and Charles Schultz's Peanuts family. His role in adult publishing at Random House placed him in close contact with numerous influential authors and world leaders, including, in part, Golda Meier, Gerald Ford, William Styron, Truman Capote, James Michener and Robert Penn Warren. From 1981 to 1983 Mr. Krinsley was also President of Ballantine Books, a subsidiary of Random House. In 1983 Mr. Krinsley was hired by Scholastic as Executive Vice President and President of the Book Group. He worked for Scholastic until 1991, when he retired, before serving for one year on the company's Board of Directors. In 1983 The Scholastic Book Group had a small presence in the school market with its book clubs. The Book Fairs were being run by a group of independent local entrepreneurs. Richard Robinson, President and founder of Scholastic, knew that he needed a savvy industry veteran to lead and recruit a new team who knew the children's book market and jumpstart a lackluster publishing program. The "Krins," as he was affectionately known by many of his colleagues, was the perfect choice for the job. While he often described himself as a book peddler in his self- deprecating style, his brilliance was the ability to put together a team that became among the best in the industry, in the process mentoring a new generation of publishing leaders. Notable series that they developed included the Babysitters Club and the Magic School Bus and Clifford the Big Red Dog. In 1986 he spearheaded a project that led to a joint United States-Russian children's poetry anthology, one of the first commercial collaborations between the two nations. His team created a new digest format for paperbacks that became the standard for series publishing and was sold into the bookstore market and through a new set of School Book Clubs. He led the strategy to buy most of the existing book fair companies and linked them to the Scholastic brand, a business that remains the biggest profit center in the Book Group today. Ultimately, under Mr. Krinsley's guidance Scholastic became the largest publisher and distributor of children's books in the world. He was an enthusiast for people, for books and for publishing. As successful and rewarding as his professional life was, Richard Krinsley's feather in his cap was his 64-year marriage to his beloved wife, Susan, whom he met when they were undergraduates at the University of Michigan, and the relationships he treasured with his three children, Jamie, Jan, Carolyn, their respective spouses, Maureen, Fred and Kevin, and all six grandchildren, Jeremy, Jeremy's wife Karen, Jenna, Anna, Danny, Emma and Jake. Those relationships created the sparkle in Richard's eyes and his never-ending love and support for his family is what sustained him. They were the pure joy in his life. A private memorial service will be planned in the future. To honor Richard, donations can be made to: United Jewish Appeal, First Book or Save the Children.

Dick was very special to me, when I joined Random House, at 23. He was extremely kind and I looked up to him enormously. I tried very hard to find him both on the Vineyard and CT to recconnect, and felt badly that I failed. My favorite moment with him came during the sales conference at which the Sesame Street books were introduced. They showed a video to give a taste of what the show was. Most of the reps were older, with grown children, and had no idea. Part of the video was Grover running up to the camera and screaming "this is near, then running back and screaming "this is far." During the afternoon break, I was lying on the beach with my eyes closed, when I felt breath on my face. I opened my eyes, and it was Dick. He screamed "this is near," and scampered off down the beach!

Dick Krinsley was a kind and loving man. We met at Scholastic. He was always encouraging, enthusiastic, creative in his problem solving and with you--not just passing by. I felt he cared and have always remembered him as one of the good guys. He has been a model for how I want to be. My condolences to his family. We have lost someone special.

I worked for and with Dick at Scholastic. He was both smart and wise. His was a sane, steady hand in what could be a slightly raucous crowd. I remember one night we were having an international "family" dinner, maybe twenty employees at the table. We started to sing (not necessarily to the enjoyment of other guests.) Waltzing Matilda for the Aussies, Alouette for the Canadians etc. when Dick was asked if he had a favorite, he said the only song he wanted to sing was the one he'd sung to Susan with his fraternity brothers the night they got pinned. I think it was "Sweet Sue." And then he sang it to us. Not a dry eye at the table. Bonnie Bryant Hiller

Dick was V.P. Director of Sales, when I joined the Random House sales force. He was a wonderful boss, and an exceptional person. He was also VERY funny. One moment in particular, from sales conference, I have been sharing with people for years.

I had the privilege of meeting Mr. Krinsley in San Francisco a few years ago. He was witty and appropriately proud of his son, Jamie, who I am fortunate to count as a close friend. My heart goes out to he, Maureen, Jenna, and the entire Krinsley famiy.

Dick was one of my mentors and a huge influence on my career--seeking me out when I joined RH as a secretary after learning I'd lived next door to Jamie in Saybrook at Yale. My great condolences to all of you. I have the best memories of his warm and generous personality, and his huge contribution to the publishing industry, where I still try to follow his example.

Hugs to all my Krinsley family pals, your father/grandfather was always a good guy whose presence always made those around him more relaxed and engaging, a gift he put to great use in business. I would be remiss in not reminding the world that his Memorial Day party in 1983 was a key moment in the sequence of events that led to the publication of Rotisserie League Baseball and the unleashing of fantasy sports. Jamie, thanks for sharing your dad with me a little, and Susan thanks for letting him play our silly little game.

Mr. Krinsley was a special person who will be missed, but thought of often. Dick was so proud of his family and his number one title(s) were that of Husband, Dad & Grandfather. Our sincere condolences to all.

Condolences to the entire Krinsley family on the passing of Richard. I went to high school with Jan and Jamie, and am a cousin of Fred. I still remember visiting the beautiful Krinsley home in New Rochelle, to meet the newly born Anna. So much heartbreak has happened in this family. I hope that Richard's passing was peaceful.
