DANIEL RIDDER Obituary

RIDDER--Daniel Hickey.

died at his home in Hobe Sound, Florida on October 13 at age 94. He graduated from Lawrenceville in 1939 and from Princeton University in 1943. Dan served in World War II in the U.S. Navy and was in the Normandy Invasion. He began his publishing career at the New York Journal of Commerce, which was owned by the Ridders, and spent the majority of his career as the Publisher and Editor of the Long Beach (California) Press Telegram. Ridder Publications was started by Dan's grandfather, Herman, and merged with the Knight Organization in 1974. Dan was a director of the Associated Press and served on their Board for nine years. He was on the Board of the Southern California Tennis Association, and was Chairman of the Los Angeles United Way. Dan was a Board member of the Newspaper Advertising Bureau, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and was appointed Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the California State College system by Ronald Reagan. He was Chairman of St. Mary's Hospital in Long Beach. Dan was an active member of the U. S. Seniors Golf Association, and worked on several Committees of the U.S.G.A. He never boasted about his eight holes-in-one! His clubs included the Royal and Ancient in St. Andrews, Scotland, Seminole, Cypress Point, Los Angeles C.C., the Jupiter Island Club, and the Bohemian Grove. Dan is survived by his wife of forty-five years, Frani Cooper and his daughter, Randy and his son, Richard, daughter-in-law, Cathy, and step-children Ellen Miller, Jay Ackerman, and Robin Foley. Please consider donations to the Treasure Coast Hospice, 1201 S.E. Indian St., Stuart, FL 34994.

May I offer my condolences to the Ridder family. I worked at the I-PT from the mid-70's to the mid-80s in advertising sales and I had the opportunity to visit his home and talk with him during the Long Beach Market Tours we held for advertisers. He was always the gentleman and gave you his full attention when in conversation. I was really just a kid back then but he knew who I was and that surprised me. Even though he must have had 1,000 employees at the time, he made the effort to know his employees. I always liked that about him.
