MICHAEL LEVINE Obituary

LEVINE--Michael Elias,

75, passed away peacefully at home on February 3, 2017, with his wife of fifty years, Carol, and his children, Sara and Anna, by his side. His relentless energy and focus, integrity, capacity for intellectual engagement, and drive to improve things, earned him success and respect as a scholar, in business, and in government. His openness to ideas and experiences, epigrammatic wit, and broad range of passions, sustained the loyalty and love of family and friends, around the world. He was a force of nature, and he will be missed.

Carol, when I got the legacy notice, I began reflecting on what an amazing life Mike led. We were friends from high school. I recall Mike listening to classical music while the rest of us where in less intellectual pursuits. He convinced me to attend Camp Cascade in Eagle Bay, NY.Then we went away to college and then attended law school. Few,if any,led the varied life that Mike did. He went from government service into academia and then into private industry. I don't know of anyone that was able to transition more often and with such ease. How are his brothers? I recall being Eddie's counselor at Camp and losing track to Gilbert, Jesse, and one I can't recall the name.Needless we spent a lot of time in each other's residence growing up. How are you doing these days? Jackie and I left Atlanta two years ago to join our boys, their wonderful wives, and our four grandchildren in Escondido, Ca just outside of San Diego. Hopig to hear from you, I remain, Alan Rolnick.

I'm so sorry for your Loss
Mike was a significant person in my life and career. We worked together for many years in and out of governmentfrom his days at the CAB as Alfred Kahn's right hand, through his current role at NYU (my son's alma mater). During his Northwest career, his vision--when the partners were suing each other--was central to the success of the joint venture that led the industry to form today's global branded alliances.

In my New York years, I was regularly invited to lecture his classes at Harvard and Yale. He had one of the sharpest minds I ever encountered. He didn't suffer fools gladly. He coupled his economic and legal acumen with a remarkable ability to focus like a laser on solutions to complex problems.

Mike's advice and opinions invariably opened new doors that stimulated my thought processes. Dinner conversations with Mike often provided an opportunity to come away with a provocative global perspective on the airline industry.

We haven't spoken in over a year and the realization he's no longer here leaves a dark void. I'll miss him.

Carol, Mike and I were good friends since high school. I last saw the two of you at Bob Schwartz'son's wedding in California.

Although we grew apart, I will miss him dearly. Our deepest condolences.
