PETER LAGEMANN

LAGEMANN--Peter.

Died on March 14 at his home in Greenwich, CT, following a battle with prostate cancer. He was 89. Mr. Lagemann was born in Englewood, NJ, a son of Eric and Margaret Lagemann. He graduated from Phillips Academy Andover and from Yale University. Immediately after World War II, prior to entering college, he served for two years in the U.S. Marine Corps. After Yale, he worked for two years in New York and Cuba for the sugar brokerage firm, Czarnikow Rionda Co., before embarking on a lifelong career on Wall Street at Stillman, Maynard & Co., becoming a general partner in 1958 and then at its successor firms H.G. Wellington & Co. and Wellington Shields & Co. Mr. Lagemann was a strong advocate of long-term investment in carefully chosen companies led by people of good character. A lifelong sailor, he stayed with them through fair weather and foul. As a private person who was by nature enthusiastic, he enjoyed sailing and tennis and working outdoors on his place in Greenwich where he lived for over 60 years. He was for a time a director of United States Lines in New York until that great steamship company was sold. He was a member of Round Hill Club and of Indian Harbor Yacht Club in Greenwich. As a dedicated student of history, he was a lifelong Republican, believing that the virtues of our federal system and free enterprise best ensured freedom and opportunity for all. Mr. Lagemann was predeceased by all his siblings and by his wife, the former Dorothy Alton. He is survived by his three dear daughters, Catherine, Dorothy and Lucy, by his beloved companion, Beatrice Dunn, by his dear friend William Korntheuer, and by the children and grandchildren of his sister, Karen Bacon, and of his brother, Robin. Services will be private.
