CHERYL JOHNSON Obituary

JOHNSON--Cheryl Cynthia.

(November 20, 1934 - September 16, 2017), passed away peacefully after a courageous battle against cancer. She was devoted wife of Robert Martin Johnson, cherished mother of Matthew Martin Johnson, loving grandmother of Grayce and Blake and eight godchildren, beloved sister of Wayne Collins and his wife Alice, and beloved cousin of Ken, and his wife Jeanette, and Steve Knott of Anaheim, California. Cheryl was raised in Southern California and moved to San Francisco where she was a gifted grade school teacher. She is godmother to several of her students' children. In 1971 Cheryl and her husband Bob relocated to New York City. Cheryl was a lover of opera and was active in the Puccini Foundation. She was very active in the Carl Schurz Park Association and the Plymouth Camps in Plymouth, Vermont. Cheryl and Bob were particularly active in the Salt Ash Mountain Camp, which their son Matt attended. Cheryl will be dearly missed by her many friends and family. All who knew her adored her for her unerring graciousness, intelligence and insightfulness, bringing light and love to so many lives. We mourn this tremendous loss. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to Calvary Hospital and/or Mary Manning Walsh 1740 Eastchester Rd., Bronx, NY 10461. Funeral services private, and a Celebration of Life will be at a later date.

She was always there for others. Impeccably dressed, always kind, a great cook. She was an inspiration to so many. She taught me patience and to not judge others. I miss her every day.

My third grade teacher from Daly City, California. Finally discovered why no more Christmas cards have come. She kept in touch with myself and a couple other students for 48 years. We loved following her life and being pen pals for so long. Blessings to all.

Such a wonderful person, words cannot describe. I was so lucky to have you in my life, "Aunt" Cheryl. I am so sorry I did not make it out to visit you in time. Glad you are with my mom now, no more pain...My love and prayers to Uncle Bob and Matthew.

I can hardly think of a kinder, more compassionate person than Cheryl. All of us who knew her were brushed by the wings of an angel. The way Cheryl lived her life brought the kingdom of God closer to our fragile planet. I was blessed to know her. My prayers go out to Robert & Matthew that they find peace knowing how much their wife and mother were loved and respected.

A star in heaven dimmed when Cheryl left us. May she rest in peace and know that her friendship enriched my life. She is very missed.
