George Mantalis Obituary

George Michael "Mac" Mantalis, 81, of Canonsburg, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, December 10, 2016, in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, with his loving family by his side.
He was born December 22, 1934, in Canonsburg, a son of the late Miltiathes and Artemis Pangadakis Mantalis.
Mr. Mantalis was a 1952 graduate of Canonsburg High School and served with the U.S. Army.
He was a member of All Saints Greek Orthodox Church, Canonsburg, and American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association Lodge 156, Canonsburg.
Mr. Mantalis was previously owner of Almac Communications and, during the 1970s, the former George and Jean's Restaurant.
He was an original member of The Four Coins, a world famous singing group of the 1950s and 1960s, who traveled the world playing the most famous clubs and venues, such as Copa Cabana in New York and hotels in Las Vegas, Nev. Over the years, they sold numerous records and four albums and appeared on many television shows. These appearances included "The Perry Como Show," "The Tonight Show," "The Steve Allen Show," "The Patti Page Show," "The Ed Sullivan Show," "The Mike Douglas Show" many times and "Dick Clark's American Band Stand" eight times. Their biggest record was "Shangri La" and was the most played record of 1957. The Four Coins also appeared in the Warner Brothers movie "Jamboree." Mr. Mantalis was a fantastic tenor whose voice gave The Four Coins their distinct sound. He was a showman on and off the stage with his humor and funny stories.
On November 25, 1957, he married his beloved wife, Jeanne Bell Mantalis, who survives.
Also left to cherish his memory are a son, Michael (Beth) Mantalis of Canonsburg; two daughters, Tamara (Sam) Achille of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Darcy (Danny) Fraizer of Canonsburg; two grandsons, George and Michael Fraizer; a brother, Gus (Rose) Mantalis of Canonsburg; two sisters, Mary Karavelis of Canonsburg and Ann Koutavis of St. Augustine, Fla.; several nieces and nephews; and many, many friends.
Deceased, in addition to his parents, is a sister, Frances Loustion.
Friends will be received from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday and 10 to 11 a.m., the time of service, Tuesday, December 13, in All Saints Greek Orthodox Church, 601 West McMurray Road, Canonsburg, with Father George Livanos officiating. Interment will follow in Woodruff Memorial Park, North Strabane Township, with full military honors accorded by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 191 Honor Guard, Canonsburg. Trisagion services will be held at 7 p.m. Monday in the church.
Memorial contributions in Mr. Mantalis' name should be made to the Iconography Fund, in care of All Saints Greek Orthodox Church, Canonsburg.
