DERER, JOSEPH
Spring Hill - Joseph Derer of Spring Hill, FL passed away August 8th, 2009 at Hospice in Brooksville, FL. He was born in Jersey City, New Jersey. He leaves behind his loving wife Doris (Chitty) Derer, of Spring Hill, FL; son Michael Derer, Kendall Park, New Jersey; daughter Susan (Derer) Burt, Camp Dennison, Ohio; brother Charles Derer, Dixon, Illinois; sister Helen (Derer) Grollmusz Ocala, FL. Grandson's Jeffery Burt, Marlboro, Vermont, Eric and Adam Derer, Kendall Park, New Jersey. Great Grandson Cyrus Burt and Great Granddaughter Roxanne Burt of Marlboro, Vermont. Joseph enlisted in the Army, Dec. 1938 and he sailed on the S.S. Republic for Hawaii. He was stationed at Schofield Barracks in Oahu, Honolulu, Hawaii. He served there 21/2 years, thankfully arriving home shortly before the bombing of Pearl Harbor. In World War II, Joe was stationed in Elmswell, Sussex, England. Serving with the 385th American Bomb Group, 8th Army Air Forces (Great Ashfield). He was a Medical Technician and assisted doctors in the care of sick, injured and wounded aircrew men. Keeping extensive records of patients. He also drove an ambulance taking the injured to hospitals. It was in England that he met Doris Chitty. She was born in Croydon, Surrey, England. They were married in St. Mary's Church in Beddington, England on July 14, 1945. He served for 30 months in the European Theater of Operations. On August 18, 2009, a Memorial Service was held in The Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida. Chaplain Charles Davies officiating.
