William Arn Obituary

William James Arn, 88, passed away at home November 9, 2012 surrounded by his loving family. A resident of Kent, he was born in Massillon to Robert and Mary Arn.

A veteran of the United States Navy, World War II, he served in the Pacific theater. An educator, he worked as a high school teacher, school psychologist, administrator and university professor. He was a member and participant in many professional and civic organizations. He was a participant in and follower of most sports especially baseball and the Cleveland Indians. He also specialized in raising a variety of tomatoes.

He was an inveterate student attending classes at seven colleges, teaching courses at four, and graduating from three: Ohio Northern, Bowling Green and Kent State. He is a professor emeritus from the University of Akron.

He was an innovator in the development of special education programs for the handicapped and the teachers, therapists and administrators that served in them, especially the developmentally disabled.

He was a source of educational support for family members and many charitable causes, especially those that involved children and animals.

He is survived by daughters, Debbie (Don) Haren of Canton, and Lisa (Paul) Plymale of Kent; son, Steven (Elizabeth) of Akron; and five grandchildren, Zach, Abi, Noah, Rachel and Cullin.

Bill will be sorely missed by everyone that knew him. So now Dad, enjoy your well-deserved rest with Mom. Your work here is done. We will never forget the love you gave us each and every day. We will always love you and cherish the memories.

To respect his wishes, cremation has taken place with internment at Standing Rock Cemetery in a dual crèche with his beloved wife of 58 years, Donna. There will be no calling hours. The private family service will be arranged by Bissler and Sons Funeral Home.

Many thanks go to the physicians, nurses, and aids for their help and service in our time of need.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Bill's name to the RMH Foundation Visiting Nurse and Hospice. P.O. Box 1204, Ravenna, Ohio 44266.
