Virginia Caddell Obituary

Virginia Jane Jackson Caddell, or ``Jane', as family and friends knew her, peacefully departed this earthly life on March 8, 2011 at Red Oak Assisted Living in Greenville, N.C.

Born November 18, 1917, Jane was the only daughter and second child of five born to the late James Clinton Jackson and Lelo Simpson Jackson in Salem, Ohio. Her brothers, James (``Jim'), Darwin and twins, Alvin and Allen; preceded her in death. She received her early Christian upbringing in Antioch Baptist Church, Cleveland, Ohio. She was a graduate of Glenville High School in Cleveland.

Jane was a graduate of Case Western Reserve University, earning both her Bachelor of Science in Education (1942) and Master of Arts in Education (1950). She studied at the University of Akron. Jane's dedication to helping her students was evident in her 33 years as a public school teacher in the state of Ohio. Glover Elementary was her last teaching post, retiring in 1983.

On June 19, 1943, Jane united in Holy Matrimony to the late Rev. Dr. G. Lincoln Caddell. This union lasted 47 years and produced a daughter, the late Karen Caddell Dokes. As a minister's wife, Jane served with her husband at the following places: St. Paul in Cleveland, St. Paul in Lima, Quinn Memorial in Steubenville, Reeds Chapel in Youngstown, Quinn Chapel in Cleveland, St. Paul in Akron (11 years) and as First-Lady of the Charleston District. In addition, Jane is a former YDP Director for the Youngstown District. After her husband's retirement from active ministry, she joined St. Paul in Akron in 1974.

In October, 2000, after living in Akron for 40 years, she moved to North Carolina to live with her grandson and family. Jane met many people and became an affiliated member of St. James AMEC in Kinston, N.C. She remained in good health until late 2008, where she lived at Red Oak Assisted Living. She was a life member of the NAACP, the Ohio Retired Teachers' Association and a life member/Golden Soror of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. This last organization represented over 70 years of service in sisterhood.

Jane leaves to cherish her legacy and memory: grandsons, Rev. Philip A. Blair of Kinston, N.C. and Alfred Benjamin Dokes of Orlando, Fla.; sister-in-law, Mrs. Lula Jackson of Cleveland, Ohio; two great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild. She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews and very dear friends.

Services will be held on Tuesday, March 15, 2011 at 1 p.m. at St. Paul A.M.E. Zion Church, 1250 S. Hawkins Ave., Akron, OH 44320, Pastor Bruce L. Butcher, officiating. Interment Mt. Peace Cemetery. Friends may visit the church from 12 p.m. until time of service. Condolences may be sent to 1206 Rhem St., Kinston, NC. 28501.

Mrs. Caddell was my first grade teacher at Howe Elementary School. I have very fond memories from being a student in her class and of her as my primary teacher. I remember attending holiday events with my class at St. Paul Church. Later in life, I had the pleasure of knowing her husband, Rev. Caddell. He would often come by the Shabazz Sandwich Shop where I worked on Copley Road and we would talk.

I extend my condolences to her family.

Mrs. Caddell was such a wonderful, wonderful lady and teacher. She had a very sweet spirit. She lived and taught by the Golden Rule, Do unto others as you would have others do unto you. She was one of the teachers that I remembered and thought about from Grace Elementary. I read her water meter years later and she remembered the Lamb Family. Mrs. Caddell will be missed. May she rest in peace.
