Charles Billington Obituary

Dr. Charles Franklin Billington was born to Dr. Dallas and Nell Billington and went home to be with his Heavenly Father on Saturday, July 31st, 2010 at the age of 82.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Sylvia Eileen, that he loved more than anyone in the world; two sons, Charles (Tammy) Billington Jr., Dallas (Carin) Billington and six grandchildren, Charles (Melissa) Billington III, Alexandra Billington, Kyle Billington, Novella Billington, Stefan Billington, Joshua Billington.

He graduated Garfield High School in 1945, and soon after married the love of his life, Sylvia Eileen. After they were married, Charles joined the army, and for most of the time was stationed in Germany, and served at the end of World War II. After returning home safely, Charles moved his new bride, Eileen, to Fort Worth Texas where he attended Baptist Bible Seminary receiving his Bachelors of Divinity. Charles continued his education at Akron University where he received a Bachelor's of Arts, and soon after he received his Master's Degree in Sociology from Kent State University. Dr. Charles had an intense passion for learning and received two separate Doctorate Degrees. He graduated from California Graduate School of Theology with a Doctorate in Theology, and then in 1963 he received a Doctorate of Divinity from Bob Jones University.

Being raised in a God Fearing Home, Dr. Charles had a great passion for Jesus Christ and spreading the Good News of Salvation all over the world. Dr. Charles could fly anything from a Lear jet to a Helicopter, and he used that gift, along with various others, to take the message of Christ to many nations and tribes. Dr. Charles Billington is best known for his time as Senior Pastor at the Akron Baptist Temple, along with his passion for missionary work all around the world. During, and even after his ministry at the Akron Baptist Temple, Dr. Charles performed over 500 weddings, conducted over 3,000 funerals, and preached countless sermons. He took leadership in starting 300 churches worldwide, as well as being one of the first pilot missionaries to fly a plane into the jungles of South America. He had no fear when it came to spreading the love of Christ.

His family and close friends knew him as the energizer bunny, nothing could stop him. He was always on the go, whether it was missionary work, preaching, teaching, visiting or counseling people in need. He went to school up into his 70's, enjoyed golfing, bowling, sailing, scuba diving, flying, reading, and his favorite: attending all his grandchildren's basketball games and school functions. He loved life, and lived every moment to its absolute fullest.

His life verse was Joshua 1:8-9. He is now home with his Heavenly Father, parents, family, friends, and thousands of people he lead to Jesus Christ.

Calling hours will be held at the Akron Baptist Temple, 2324 Manchester Rd., Akron, 44314 on Wednesday August 4, 2010 from 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral will follow at the Akron Baptist Temple on Thursday at 1 p.m., with services held by his son, Rev. Dallas R. Billington. Interment Rose Hill Burial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Dr. Charles F. Billington to the Akron Baptist Temple Missions Fund. Church map, directions and the Billington Family condolence book can be found online at www.bacherfuneralhome.com in memory of Dr. Charles F. Billington.

I had the opportunity to serve with and under Dr. Charles Billington for over 21 years as the Minister of Music for both Dr. Charles and Dr. Dallas. Those were the best years of my 54 years of ministry. They were both great to work for and with. We never had a cross word or a misunderstanding. I cherish their memory and still pray for Chuck and Dallas and their families. Traveling with both of them to their ancestral home in Kentucky, flying alone with Dr. Charles, participating in thousands of funerals, are just some of my lifelong memories. God bless these special families.

Dr. Charles was a devoted shepard to his flock and will never not be remembered as long as my family is still alive. Until we meet him in the air his memory will not be forgotten.

To the Billington Family,
We want to offer our deepest condolences. May God comfort you in the days ahead. I worked at the church during the late 70's and one of the things I enjoyed the most was when Dr. Charles would have me go over to his mother's home and do yard work for her. She was always so kind to me. I remember those days like they were yesterday. I was saved under his teaching and baptized by him as well. God is good!!

Dear Billington Family: I have wonderful memories of growing up at the Akron Baptist Temple. As a teenager, I took piano lessons from Estelle Ruth(played organ for the Civic Theater). I also wanted to learn to play the organ. My parents couldn't afford to buy an organ for me, so Rev. Charles said I could practice on the organ in the original sanctuary. He would always walk through, smile, and say hello. I was very grateful to him for allowing me to do this. As others have already said, your husband/father led so many to Christ and many he may not have known. I feel so lucky to have to grown up in the Temple with so many wonderful people and pastors. May God surround you with wonderful memories for years to come. Can you imagine the welcoming committee on the moment of his passing with his dad, Rev. Jim Moore, and Rev. Powell? Awesome! They in turn welcomed Rev. Paul Outland. What a grand reunion day!!!

Thirty-two years ago this month, at the funeral of Dr. Dallas F. Billington, Dr. B.R. Lakin spoke these words, “There was a man sent from God whose name was Dallas.” The same could be said of Dr. Charles Billington. Each of these godly men impacted my life, for which I shall be eternally grateful. I accepted Jesus Christ as my personal savior on December 31, 1961, at a New Year’s Eve Service in which Dr. Lakin was preaching. Dr. Dallas Billington led me in the sinner’s prayer in the time between the two services, and Charles Billington baptized me in 1962.

I was an active member of the ABT until my family and I moved to Arizona in December 1973. I have so many precious memories of the Baptist Temple, of the godly teachers, Vacation Bible School, church camp, youth rallies, and the wonderful music provided each Sunday by the choir and excellent musicians and vocalists. I recall vividly how mission-minded Charles was, in church planting around the world. My life was indeed blessed by having attended the ABT.

As I read through the tributes to Dr. Charles, I thought of how many dear ones from the ABT were in Heaven ready to welcome him home. I am sure that he heard the words, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant. Enter into my rest.” Praise God for the life that Charles led, for his dependence upon the Word of God.

Prayerfully,

Dear Billington Family and extended family of the A.B.T. It is with deep sense of sympathy but also a great deal of joy that I write this. It was indeed a great loss to all with the calling home of Dr. Charles to be with the Lord. The Billington name has always meant a lot to me and my family, even long after moving to Arizona in the 70's. I only wish that I had the opportunity to get to know Dr. Charles as much as my parents and grandparents did. But I did know that he would freely give of his time for people and go out of his way to show love for his fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. He will greatly be missed by all he touched (both directly and indirectly). May god be with all of the Billington family as they celebrate the life of Dr. Charles, and with the city of Akron as they have lost a true son.

Dear Eileen, Chuck, Dallas and family. Dr Charles was a very special person to our family. Dr Charles married Dell and I in 1967 and preached the funeral of my brother Charles Clemons in 1970. After we moved from Akron to Phoenix AZ in 1976, we always took the opportunity to come see Dr Charles when we were in town. He never forgot who we were and always had a bright smile, a handshake and a hand on the shoulder for us. We had the opportunity to see you both last year. I will always treasure the photo we took of Mom and Dad (Lillian and Oscar Clemons) with Eileen and Charles. Mom and Dad loved you both and treasured your friendship for those many years. I know that we will all miss him, but we have the promise that we will meet in Heaven again. May God keep you in His comfort and know that we love you all.

Dear Billington Family,
My prayers are for you in this time of sadness. Dr Charles was certainly a faithful man of God, and he was my hero of the faith, so kind and caring to all of us. He had the funerals for my grandmother, mother, uncles, as well a young great-nephew. He was truly a man of God, and was instrumental in leading so many to salvation through Christ. Dr. Charles had such a compassionate heart for the mission field. His work on this earth is finished, and now he is rejoicing with Jesus, family and loved ones.
God Bless You

Dear Eileen,Charles, and Dallas and families:
I was saved at the age of 12,by Dr. Dallas F. my parents and I were all baptized the same time.

I have lost several people in my family
Charles was there as soon as he was called.
I just cannot imagine the church without a Billington, they were all cut

To the Billington family and the Akron Baptist Temple family

Our sincere sympathy to each of you during this time. We were members of the ABT for 36 years before retiring to Tennessee. While we lived in Akron, our lives revolved around the church and its activities, which we still miss. What a blessing Dr. Dallas and Dr. Charles were to us and the Akron community. Our prayers are that their legacy will continue.

Dear Billington Family,
I am in awe of how Rev. Charles' life
affected so many outside Akron, OH. He was in the pulpit the night I went forward and asked the congregation to extend the "right hand of fellowship" when I accepted the Lord in 1969. And I remember his shiny shoes, too! Thank you for sharing him with us.

To the Billington Family
What a priviledge it was to work with Dr. Charles. My time with him will be cherished forever. His smile, his words of encouragement and instruction were always a blessing to me. He truly loved God, as was evident by his life. His Christ filled life, his passsion for the lost, his willingness to talk to anyone, no matter who they were, and his always having time to talk to the children, no matter how much of hurry he was in, he still took time to stop and talk to the children. I know my children remember this about him. His ability to expound on the scriptures, to be able to speak on a moments notice, if neccessary, were wonderful traits of this man of God. Yes, he will be greatly missed, but he will be greatly remembered. Revelation 14:13 "And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them." Only heaven will reveal the muiltitudes of people who were touched by the life of Dr. Charles F. Billington. May God give you peace and comfort during these hard times. Please know that our prayers are with you now and always.
The Radebaugh Family.

How I wish we could have been in Akron to express our appreciation and sympathies to the Billington family whom we love dearly. Dr. Billington was a kind man who loved his family and church family. He was my pastor for over 20 years. He invested in me in a way that few men of his stature would have, bringing me onto his ministry staff at age 24, a privilege for which I am eternally grateful. He showed a fatherly patience with me and my family, and along with Eileen has had a great impact on Vicki and me. Our oldest daughter took her first steps just outside Dr. Charles' office during a season we remember with great fondness. Dr. Charles has run with perseverance the race set before him, he has finished the course. He has fought the good fight. To God be the Glory!

What a testimony Dr. Billington left for the ABT Family to emulate. His love for God and for God's Word found in the KING JAMES BIBLE were paramount to following and staying DOCTRINALLY sound. Thank you Dr. Billington. May ABT get back to the foundation you left behind.

Dallas:

My thoughts and prayers are with the entire Billington family at this difficult time.

The entire Billington family used to have Sunday brunch at the Rose Villa Restaurant in Portage Lakes where my mama worked for many years. I remember when my mama would arrive home from work after waiting on the Billington family telling all five (5) of her children what a beautiful, wonderful family that you had. I will keep all of you in my prayers.

Charles Billington was a bright light among us. His passing is a loss for us but a gain for the Kingdom. A man's integrity lives on after him in the lives of his children and his grandchildren. ABT was blessed to have been stewarded by the Billington family. Charles had to be especially proud of Dallas whose ministry at ABT touched many, many people. May your family find the peace that surpasses understanding knowing that Charles lives with Christ.

Love, joy and peace.

But our Loss is Heavens gain.I didn't have very many contacts with Dr. Billington, but, I appreciated his Frankness,as I am that way too.He seemed to have a heart for missions, 'cause I remember Dr. Dallas mentioning that his son, Charles was on yet another Missions trip, as he could fly himself there.I believe his pilots license was rated for multi-engine aircraft. It takes a great mind to accomplish that.I'm sure Dr. Charles & all those other great servants of God are having a great Re-union there in Heaven.

Charles, Thank you for everything you have done for me and my family. God bless you and rest in peace.

My Final Prayer

Father… as I drift away and peacefully depart
This restless soul and painful shell that held my aching heart
Fulfill me with Your glory and love beyond this earth
And bid that I come join You and share in Heaven’s worth

Embarking on this journey that once I feared to face
I realize that death is but a step toward Your embrace
And mercy and forgiveness await me at Your throne
Forgive me, please, my earthly sins as I now stand alone

I humbly ask You for one thing… a simple final prayer
Attend to those I left behind… give them Your loving care
Let not their tears be for my soul, for I am in Your grace
But let them know that I am first to know Your smiling face

No pain or sorrow will I know while I am at Your side
All suffering is left behind… You will not be denied
Grant them a life of hope and love to happily prepare
To meet with me again someday… this is my final prayer

My heart goes out to the Billington family and friends. I am so sorry that Charles' life ended as it did but I believe that was "quiet time" between him and God. I accepted Christ as my savior at the Baptist Temple while Charles' father Dallas was Pastor. Charles and my late husband were classmates at Garfield High. Charles led our marriage vows and then officiated at the funeral of my late husband...Michael Dremak, retired Chief of Police/Tallmadge. Both these men went on to serve people and now both men are in the presence of their Lord, free of their trials here on earth.

"What a day, glorious day that will be",
I can hear that old song now.
The Akron Baptist Temple is as much my heritage, as my blood relatives and ancestors. I was there for thiry years of my life,I sat under Dr. Dallas's preaching, and then Dr. Charles. He married my husband and I in 1967. The older I get, the more I praise God for for my heritage at the ABT, for how it has guided my life, and praise God for His plan to send my parents to Akron from rural Ky. I can still hear Dr. Dallas's words from the pulpit, and. Dr. Charle's voice preaching the True Gospel. My son was saved under his voice, and was baptized under his hands at 10 years old,in 1977, and is carrying on our Christian heritage with his family. The tears are streaming as I write this, thinking back on all those years, the Sunday School Teachers. the Preaching, the revivals, The Blackwwod Brothers singings, the trips to the old Church Park, It was life saving. My life, and the life of my family, parents, relatives, children, would never have been what they were and are now, had it not been for the ABT,Dr.Dallas and Dr. Charles,Preaching and teaching the full TRUTH-- That never be taken from us. That is what we stand on---The Truth, we know the truth, but we also know when the truth is not being presented, and we know to turn our backs on deciet-this is what sets us apart from the world.
As Dr.Dallas favorite song was "Heaven Will Surely Be Worth It All" And They are all having a Glorious Day. To dear Eileen, Sons, and family, our hearts, love, and prayers, are with you.

I spent the most formative years of my life in the pews at Akron Baptist Temple listening to Dr. Charles. I am grateful for his faithfulness in all things. I imagine that the reunion with the many that have gone on ahead is still going on in heaven. I remember Dr. Charles choking up when he talked about getting to heaven. God bless you, Billington family, for sharing him so generously with us.

Dr. Charles Billington was such a great man! What made him so great was not what he did or accomplished but what he allowed GOD to accomplish through him. We are at our greatest when we are most submissive! We will miss him dearly. Eileen, Chuck, Dallas and Carin - our sincerest condolences and most heartfelt prayers go out to all of you.

Dear Eileen and family,

Was so sorry to hear about Charles. I know this is a huge loss to your family and friends. I wish I had had the opportunity to know you all on a more personal level through the years. I will never forget receiving my salvation at the Akron Baptist Temple and the beautiful baptism ceremony when I was a young teen. Thank you for taking time for us on short notice when we were in town. Until we meet again . . .

My thoughts and prayers are with Eileen, Chuck and Dallas as well as their families at this time. Charles is at home with God now and we will all see him again.
Rarely a day went by that conversation he and I had thru the years did not come back to me as well as all the time that Dallas and Chuck and I spent together. I don't know if I will ever be able to express to any one the influence that Charles had on my own life.
I thank God ever day for the blessing of having know the entire family.

Dr. Charles will be missed. I was saddened by the news, however, joyous to know he is with his Father, family and friends. All my childhood and young adult memories were at ABT and Dr. Charles' preaching. Much love and prayers.

Charles was a good friend to my husband and me. I remember that Charles, Paul Outland and I took our Texas driver's test the same day. I passed and they both had to take it over. I loved that. We were all in the Baptist Bible Seminary at the same time. I know he will be missed by all those who knew him. We loved him and Eileen, although we didn't get to see them very often. We had our ministry in Dover, OH and they had theirs in Akron. I'm sure that he and my Bill are having a good time together right now. My love and prayers are for the family left behind. It will be the little things
that you will remember,
the quiet moments,
the smiles, the laughter.
And although it may seem
hard right now,
it will be the memories
of these little things
that help to push
away the pain
and bring the smiles
back again.
At a time like this, we are at a loss for words to express our condolence to someone who has lost a loved one.
How to say it to bring comfort?
How to say that we care?
How to say that we understand?
Words, however kind,
can't mend your heartache:
but those who care and
share your loss wish you
comfort and peace of mind.
May you find strength
in the love of family
and in the warm embrace
of friends. May God keep you all safe and from harm in His loving arms until you meet and see Charles again....He will be waiting at the gate.... take care..... Linda Crawford Hahn

I grew up in Warren, OH under the great admiration and respect that my late father, Rev. Robert Harrah, felt for Dr. Charles, who was his colleague and friend. My husband and I joined A.B.T. in 1983. All 3 of our children were saved and baptized there. We are grateful to God for his life and testimony, and are praying for all of you.

Eileen, Chuck, Tammy, Dallas, Carin and All the Grandchildren,

When I think of Dr. Charles, one word keeps coming to mind- faithful! He was faithful to you all, faithful to our church family, and most importantly, faithful to his God. Dr. Charles is a part of my Christian heritage and for that I am most grateful. What a reunion he surely is having with his parents. I can only imagine...

Thanks for sharing him with thousands.

I was raised in the Akron Baptist Temple along with my sister and brother. We loved Dallas and Charles Billington. Charles was there for my sister's funeral, my brother-inlaw, and my father. He renewed my mother and father's vows after 61 years of marriage. My father sadly died the next day and he was there at the hospital with the whole family to share our grief and pray with us.
My prayers go out to the family but I can only imagine the rejoicing in Heaven!
