And so the torch passes to a new generation. Ed Vandergriff was my dad's first cousin. With the death of Doug Herman on the same day as Ed, only one male, Valton Herman son of Ben Herman, and three Herman family women of their generation remain, all daughters of Lillie Belle Herman Harbuck. My dad (Wiley Herman) grew up in Soper with Ed. My dad was known as "Mutt Herman". It was Ed who my dad called back in the 60's when a tornado hit Soper. Ed called right back to let dad know that indeed my mom's parents were okay despite they no longer had a roof. What a hard life but filled with adventure all those cousins lived...thanks to them we are able to enjoy so much today.

I have lived next door to Mr. Vandergriff for 16 years. My kids would sit on his front porch with him and talk and he would give them candy. They adored Mr. Vandergriff. We all did. He could always put a smile on your face. We will miss him.

Ed Vandergriff was my neighbor for a couple of years. You will never find such a good, caring, honest man as he. I hope that I can be half the man he was.

He was my Dad's first cousin and went to school at Soper with my Mother. I'll always remember how big his hand's were and how difficult it was to shake hands with him. He had a grip like a vice and his word was his bond. His Dad was my grandfather's older brother and they went to the grave spelling their last names differently, each saying the other was incorrect.
At 94 years of age he was still driving and delivering meals to shut-ins in Hugo. His mind was still sharp and he could tell of childhood events of growing up in Choctaw County. He told me about a trip that he and his Dad made to Dowelltown, Tennessee to visit the old homeplace where his grandfather had lived before embarking to Indian Territory. Until that time my only knowledge of where the Vandergriffs/Vandagriffs had come from was somewhere in "central Tennessee".
He was the last Vandergriff of his generation and he lived a full and productive life. I'll miss him for that reason knowing a chapter in history has been written.
May the road rise up to meet you,
may the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
and the rain fall soft upon your fields,
and until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

Trooper Vandergriff was truly an Oklahoma pioneer! Without men like him, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol wouldn't be what it is today, a truly professional group of men and women dedicated to public service. I salute him for his years of service to Oklahoma and to the United States during WWII. Rest in peace, Trooper Vandergriff, for you've truly earned it.

I am only 83, just a kid in relation to Mr. Vandergriff, but wish to express my condolences for his loss. I did not know him personally, but was an auto casualty claim adjuster for 34 years, and saw the aftermath of what the troopers went through. I will always respect and admire their efforts, and all the help they gave people. Everyone I met was a fine gentleman.

It was an honor to interview Mr. Vandergriff last year at Hugo. It was easy to tell that the stories he shared came from his heart. He served OHP and this state with all he had. It was a blessing to meet him. My thoughts are with his family. Sincerely, Bryan Painter, The Oklahoman.
