And so the torch passes to a new generation. Ed Vandergriff was my dad's first cousin. With the death of Doug Herman on the same day as Ed, only one male, Valton Herman son of Ben Herman, and three Herman family women of their generation remain, all daughters of Lillie Belle Herman Harbuck. My dad (Wiley Herman) grew up in Soper with Ed. My dad was known as "Mutt Herman". It was Ed who my dad called back in the 60's when a tornado hit Soper. Ed called right back to let dad know that...

I have lived next door to Mr. Vandergriff for 16 years. My kids would sit on his front porch with him and talk and he would give them candy. They adored Mr. Vandergriff. We all did. He could always put a smile on your face. We will miss him.

He was my Dad's first cousin and went to school at Soper with my Mother. I'll always remember how big his hand's were and how difficult it was to shake hands with him. He had a grip like a vice and his word was his bond. His Dad was my grandfather's older brother and they went to the grave spelling their last names differently, each saying the other was incorrect.
At 94 years of age he was still driving and delivering meals to shut-ins in Hugo.His mind was still sharp and he could tell...
