James Yelvington Obituary

August 17, 1917 - June 11, 2011 OKLAHOMA CITY James LeGette Yelvington, 93, was welcomed into God's Kingdom in Heaven on June 11, 2011. Jim was born in Port Lavaca, Texas to Anne Pauline Moore and Henry Blakely Yelvington on August 17, 1917. He earned his Associate's Degree from Schreiner Institute and his Bachelor of Science Degree in Geology from The University of Texas (Hook 'em Horns!). He retired from Meade Energy after 30 plus years in the oil and gas industry. Jim served in the United States Air Force during WWII as a bomber pilot and was decorated with the Silver Star and Purple Heart. He was a longtime member of Calvin Presbyterian Church. While attending the University of Texas he met the love of his life, Jean Simmons, and they enjoyed many fabulous years of marriage until Jean passed away in 1976. In 1978, he was blessed with a loving marriage to Mary Bernard and they spent many happy years together until her death in 2007. Jim is preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Henry, Armand, Thomas, and Alvaro, and one daughter, Carol Beaty. He is survived by two sisters, Mary Joe Burleson and Polly Posey; daughters, Priscilla McMillen (Steve), Melinda Earnheart (Bill), and Leigh Tennant. "Grandaddy" will be missed by Brian and Jordan Kelley, Tommy Kelley, Amy Kelley, Sid Earnheart, Ross and Christel Earnheart, Kyle Earnheart, Trevor Tennant, and Joey and Lauren Beaty. His great granddaughter, Adeline, will also miss her "Great Daddy." "Uncle LeGette" was loved by many nieces and nephews. Our Daddy was one in a million...a selfless, kindhearted, loving, giving, generous, honest man who set the example for the rest of us. Even at the very end, he was still concerned with others more than himself, asking "What can I do for you babe?" He was the daddy everyone wanted, but we were fortunate enough to have. We will miss his singing, poetry reading, watching the grass grow, toddy time, trips to Padre, candy bars in the fridge, and his unconditional love. Most of all, we will simply miss our Daddy. "Sing it pretty, Leon." "You're a scholar and a gentleman." The family would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Brian Geister for all the years of compassion and care. Also, thanks to Debbie Crouch who took such wonderful, loving care of our Dad. Graveside services will be held Friday, June 17, 10:30 a.m. at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: The Multiple Sclerosis Society of Oklahoma, 6051 N. Brookline Ste. 121, OKC, OK 73112 or The Alzheimer's Association of Oklahoma 3555 NW 58 Ste. 220, OKC, OK 73112.

Prayers of thanksgiving for a distant cousin. Besides being one of the quiet heros of the Greatest Generation, he must have been a wonderful man to sit down with over a "toddy" (or cold candy bar - hallmarks of a true Yelvington!) God's grace to each of you whom he left behind...

My heart fills with gratitude and joy from knowing and loving such a truly remarkable human being. Many, naturally think their "daddy" is/was the greatest. Well, rest assured, those of us who knew the relationship Mr Yelvington had with Mel and Pris would arguably disagree.

He's the father that we all should have been blessed with. Quite certainly all of us are better individuals for knowing this magnificent, unconditionally loving, gentle man. When thinking of Mr Yelvington, "To Sir With Love" always pops in my head and I smile. It says it all so perfectly - loving father figure, wise teacher, ultimate role model, best friend. Sweet Mr Yelvington, "what, what can I give you in return?" For now, simply thank you.
