Born in Hudson, N.Y., he grew up in Washington, D. C. He was the son of the late Lawrence L. and Jean H. Ellis.

Census and served as consultant to many organizations, including the Council of Graduate Schools, the Canadian Social Sciences Research Council, the National Science Foundation, the National Institute of Mental Health, and the Harvard University Center for Research in Careers. Were it not for Bob Ellis, my early days as a new faculty member would have been much more difficult and much less enjoyable. He eased my transition from graduate student to faculty member, and strongly supported my advancement through the ranks. I am immensely grateful to him, and consider myself lucky to have been his colleague.

I have known Dr. Ellis since my days as a graduate student at the University of Maryland. I always enjoyed our conversations and admired his commitment to sociology. He will be missed.

Dr. Ellis was one of my favorite people. He hired me in Soc. as his secretary in 1977 and was truly a great boss and person.
