WALTER WOOD Obituary

Wood, Walter, age 91, author, creator of the original Weight Watcher frozen meals, and founder and director of Build A Wider Bridge, died July 3th at a hospital near his home in Laguna Woods, CA.

The cause of death was heart disease. He was a US Army veteran of World War II. He was a Mason, a lifetime member of Mensa, and a professional member of the Institute of Food Technologists. He spent his professional career as a Food Technologist and his educational career as a Food Scientist.

Walter Edison Wood, the fourth child of Harry and Laverna (George) Wood, was born in Edgemoor, Wilmington, Delaware, and grew up in the mountains of western Pennsylvania, in the small village of South Fork. He was a soldier in the US Army in Europe during World War II.

He received a B.S. from Penn State University (1949) and an M.S. from the University of Idaho (1951), soon afterward becoming a product-development specialist in the food industry. He created the original Weight Watcher frozen meals (1967) as well as many other well-known products for Kraft Foods and other firms.

In 1992, he founded and directed Build A Wider Bridge, a non-profit, that gathered and donated over 100,000 foods-related technical books to universities in six nations: Mexico, El Salvador, Colombia, Ecuador, Chile, and Croatia.

Since 1996, he has authored a family history, an autobiography, a cookbook, a how-to book, and eighteen historical novels, all available at InfinityPublishing.com, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and other suppliers.

He is survived by four sons, Gary, Robert, Raymond, and Leland.

He was buried in the Riverside (CA) Military Cemetery.

Sad to hear of Walters passing. I had a lengthy telephone conversation in the 1990s with Walter regarding a letter he sent to the England in search of ancestor information. He seemed a very nice chap, and I like to think the information I passed on was most helpfull.
