JOHN MCCARTHY Obituary

McCarthy, John P., 81, of Irvine, California, died Wednesday, June 1, 2011 in North Tustin after a courageous fight against cancer. Born in Columbia, South Carolina, October 14, 1929 to Justin and Cecyl McCarthy, John was an excellent athlete at Beverly Hills High School and thereafter enlisted in the Army in 1947. Marrying Carolyn Elayne O'Connor in 1952, they spent a lifetime traveling the world. He went on to pursue his love of writing and created many different publications in the travel and automotive industry. John enjoyed being around family and friends and was always up for any adventure he could fit in his busy schedule. For the past ten years, he was the editor of " The Raider Patch", a publication for the Marines. He recently published his tribute to Robert Maulding and Harry Reynolds in "Gung Ho Marines: The Men of Carlson's Raiders". John is survived by his son, Sean; his daughter-in-law, Anita; his two daughters, Erin McCarthy and Lori McCarthy; his quasi son-in-law, Steve Myers; and his two grandsons, Mason and Brett McCarthy. John was predeceased by his wife, Carolyn Elayne McCarthy, who passed away in 1989. The memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 18th at 12:00 noon at the Clubhouse at The Meadows in Irvine, 14851 Jeffrey Road, Irvine, CA 92618, located off the 5 Freeway and Jeffrey Road. There is a big void in my world with John gone. We worked together for over 10 years and he drove me crazy the entire time, but I loved him because of it. He was a kind, and loving gentleman. I will miss his wit and fun loving nature. I know more about WWII than I ever thought possible because of his vast military knowledge. Will miss him... Kathi "Patch"
