Jimmy was the "A" Team medic when I was assigned to E28A for 8 years. He was the most compassionate paramedic and aggressive firefighter I have had the pleasure to serve with. I will miss you sorely and will see again when we all go "home". God Bless to his wife and children. It has been an honor.

Jimmy-O!
I will always remember riding in the spacious back seat of old Engine 330 with you during that strike team up north. Trying to stump each other with the 60's and 70's music on the ipod will always make me smile. Watching a Laker's playoff game with you is an experience I will never forget either...again, making me smile right now. Thanks for the memories, the laughs, and the privilege of working with you. You are truly a legend and will always be missed. God Bless you and your family.

I would first like to express my thoughts and prayers to Jim's family. I had the honor and pleasure of working closely with Jim as a Civilian Traffic Investigator with the Irvine PD for many years. You could always count on Jim to lend a helping hand or to brighten your day with one of his brilliant grins. He could bring a smile to your face even on the worst of days. I know you've got a special place in Heaven. You will be missed.

Jim was the first "field guy" I met in 1986 while on a "special assignment" to help establish and implement the first, and very unpopular centralized staffing desk (think overtime when you don't want it for straight-time pay). He wanted to make absolutely sure I knew he was available for OT, regardless of hours or pay. Not only did we end up talking frequently, but he stopped by regularly to make sure I knew who he was and what he could and would do...I soon looked forward to his calls and visits and our conversations about work, family and life. After a few months, I accepted a career position with OCFA and my interactions with Jim became all too infrequent. No matter because, whenever our paths crossed, he reinforced the impact he made early in by career/life:
1. It's people that matter. In a culture ruled by classifications, rank, protocols, politics and other silos, Jim ignored it all and focused on who you were as a person. It didn't matter how long it had been or who was around, whenever our paths crossed Jim greeted me with a sincere and often politically incorrect but always welcome hello. He found time to exchange updates on what was truly important, regardless of whatever "pressing" department issue was at hand, which he seldom mentioned. I will forever miss that.
2. It's all good. Regardless of the curves and hurdles that both our professional and personal lives present, Jim had a positive outlook. Even after sharing a difficult experience or concern, he was positive about the outcome and future. Each interaction started and ended with a laugh or smile...every single time. I strive to be like that.
Sharon, you know our hearts go out to you. Jimmy, Daniel & Kevin, I hope you know by now that the only thing that made your Dad prouder than being a firefighter was being your Dad...I loved the stories. He made such an impact on so many of us that had a fraction of the time you cherished and, even as we thank God for him and question his passing, we take comfort in knowing he lives on through each of you.

I only knew Jimmy in passing however what I did know was there wasn't a person that didn't like him. He had the personality that when you walk into a room not knowing him you felt as if you had known him for years. As the base hospital coordinator at Mission I had the opportunity to speak with him regarding patients he had taken care. He was always very happy and professional. I will miss him.

Some people put on a Firefighters gear and still never look like a Firefighter. From the day Jimmy O came through the doors, we knew this was going to be a great Firefighter. When he put on the gear or wore his uniform, he was the Marlboro Man of the Fire Service. His look, his skills, and his attitude made him highly respected and recognized as one of the Finest to walk the streets of Orange County. A great Firefighter, Father, and Friend, he will leave a huge hole in the fabric of the department. One things for sure, the good Lord just made Heaven a lot safer, and got a great ball player for his roster as well. Jimmy O we all miss you so much already....God Bless my old friend. Hank Raymond

Sharon, Jimmy, Daniel and Kevin,
Taylor and I were so touched by Jim's Viewing last evening. There were so many caring friends and family to share in the remembrance of your dear Jim. The Firemen who attended couldn't have been more helpful. You are truly blessed to have such a loving group of people in your lives, especially during this time of sadness. The love shown to Jim throughout the evening was unforgettable.
I will remember Jim fondly as the handsome Fireman and Paramedic who was devoted to Sharon, his three sons, his family and career. He will be missed by all who knew him. My love and prayers to you all.

What an incredible man! A lot of people spend their entire lives searching for the elusive "Truth". We all knew that if you wanted the truth, you could just ask Jimmy! It might not be delivered with a pretty bow, but it was gonna be the truth. You've left an unfillable whole, my friend. Rest well!

Jimmy you will be missed by all. You had a way about you that put all of us at ease. Personally as an EMT, you always took the time to teach us and help us grow into some of the Paramedic & Firefighters that we have become today. You were an inspiration and someone to lookup to and I personally wanted to strive to be the kind of guy you were. Your Patients and all those you came in contact with during your service to this county, state and the world are only better because of the Man you were. I can only think that God needed you with him more than we all did down here. I know the Fishings going to be great. Take care Jimmy. We will never forget you...

I only had the pleasure of working with Jimmy a few times. Yet every time our paths crossed, he made feel like I was a true friend of his. Jimmy defined magnanimity. In fact, I'll put the definition here right next to his picture where it belongs!
. MAGNANIMITY, n. [L. magnanimitas; magnus, great, and animus, mind.] Greatness of mind; that elevation or dignity of soul, which encounters danger and trouble with tranquility and firmness, which raises the possessor above revenge, and makes him delight in acts of benevolence, which makes him disdain injustice and meanness, and prompts him to sacrifice personal ease, interest and safety for the accomplishment of useful and noble objects."

Jimmy O... such a first class individual. His approach and attitude towards life and people in general is what made him so special. He never felt he was above anyone and always found a way to help... even when it came to helping those of us at the bottom. His selflessness and love for people is something I've applied to my life and will be forever grateful for. Thank Jimmy.... you continue to live through us all.

I had 4 scary emergency situations in my life and each time the lights and sirens delivered Jim to the situation to take control. My 4 year old got hit by a car in front of my house, another daughter suffered a concussion playing basketball, my mom was In a terrible accident, and another child had to go to ER for after a scary injury. Each incident Jim delivered expert care and a positive outcome!
I used to tell Jim he was my Guardian Angel, because he was ALWAYS there for my family in an emergency. Having the chance for Jim to be your medic was a definite benefit of living in University Park, and in Station 4 territory!
Even when things were tough, one thing never changed, he had the heart and expertise of a true life saving hero. Jim, thank you for being a great friend, neighbor, and role model for the kids.
Sharon, Jimmy, Daniel, and Kevin we love you and our family will always be here for you.

Jimmy, I remember the first time I worked with you on medic 4 you said to me that there is something you should know about me, I was thinking uh oh! you said "they call me the mayor of Irvine" by the end of the shift I knew exactly what they were talking about. We could not go anywhere without you knowing somebody of having somebody walking down the street and waving at you in the medic van. You where definitely the firefighter's firefighter and the medic's medic. My wife Teresa has very fond memories of you when you used to bring her patients at IMC. he was a new nurse and you were very patient with her. We will miss you very much and you are one very good example to follow. Rest in peace my brother.

September 21, 2010
Dear Owen Family, I have known big Jimmy O for over 30 years. He was a "rookie" for me at JWA in 1980. From the first day he walked in the door, you could tell he was truly in his element. He was hardworking, dedicated, caring and smart. He had a sense of humor that was unbeatable, a sense of life that few possess. I could always count on him 30 years later given me a big hug and that huge smile. Whenever I was on an incident and I knew he was there, I could count on the fact that the job was going to get done....and nobody hurt. His example of how to live your life is a good reminder to all of us. I am so saddened by this loss, but I have concluded that whatever is on the other side, it will be a better place knowing that Jimmy will be there to greet us all. Your dad lived a great life and at the end of the day, he was very blessed to have the love of not only his family but by the entire fire department family. Few people obtain that much love and admiration for being consistently a first class guy....a true friend. We will all miss him and he wont be forgotten. The goal is now to live a life that your dad would be proud of....live it like he did, loving, generous and to the max!May God bless you all! Love ya Jimmy!

I wish I could just have one more cup of coffee with you at the morning table, and enjoy a funny story about work...Talk about another Mexico Run...and how epic the fishing was, and how we were gonna cook them up this time...Or how you just ran a few calls, drug log was signed, and the rig was where I left it(only to find out, you saved someone else, another heroic day) So humle... I had the pleasure of working E36A, and got to see you and Rich pretty much every shift (and sometimes in between)....You are Classic, a legend. It is hard to know you are gone, but I have learned a much greater passion for life. Your energy was contagious. You LIVED IT. We love you, we miss you, and you are in a better place. We are so sad over the loss of the man who we called "Big Jim". It's been several years since we've seen him, but we talked about him often and always with a smile on our faces. Jesse and Beau looked up to him as the best example of a real man. Since Jesse and Jimmy were best friends at Vista Verde, he was lucky to get spend a lot of time around Big Jim. He left a lasting impression with Jesse on how to live your life to the fullest and always with a smile on his face. He always took the time to offer Beau a ride or just stop for a little talk. He was the reason Beau has spent the last five years as an OCFA fire explorer. Thanks Big Jim! It was an honor to have known you. Our prayers for Sharon, Jimmy, Kevin and Daniel.

As a contracted "guest" at OCFA, and although I didn't know Jimmy well, he was always eager to talk and make me feel like part of the OCFA family. I was blessed to have known you. You always had a big smile and that mischievous look and twinkle in your eye. We always ask why God always seems to take the best ones way too soon. I will see you again my friend in that castle in the sky. Love you JO! Rest in Peace..

Jimmy, you were a fireman's fireman. Didn't matter if someone had 2 weeks, 2 years, or 42 years on the job, you treated everyone with dignity, kindness, and respect. Everyone will miss that bushy mustache above that never-ending smile. You were truely loved by all who were fortunate enough to know you. God Bless....your family will be in my families prayers....

J.O.: You were one the finest individuals and firefighter I have ever had the pleasure to have known. I learned so much from you during the 4 years we spent working together at FS#4. Whether it was the futility of stopping your famous fall away jump shot or fighting for the nozzle on a fire, you will always be held in the highest of esteem. I will miss you my friend, but will never forget you. God Bless You and the Rest of Us you leave behind.

On April 7, 2002, I collapsed on a basketball court at UCI due to a severe heart arrhythmia. Jimmy and Richard were the first two guys at my side, doing their thing. Minutes later, my heart stopped. The next thing I remember was opening my eyes as I was being pushed into an ambulance on a stretcher, and seeing Jimmy looking over me. "Feeling better, huh." Jimmy, Richard and their team saved my life that day, and I will always be indebted to them. JO, you will be missed, friend.

My wife and I have our youngest son today because of his professionalism and immediate care. He was on duty when we called 911 because our son was experiencing breathing difficulty and was struggling to live. Jimmy entered our home along with his paramedic team members and Captain of his engine company and he took completely over. Restoring his life and then rushing him to intensive care at CHOC never leaving his side. I came to believe in miracles that morning...and his name is James Owen. We have given thanks for and to him every day and especially on Thanksgiving. Heaven truly has a new saint now in him. May God bless him and his family and comfort them. His family shared him with us.
The OCFA was fortunate and also blesst to have him wear that St. Florian badge of honor.

I will always remember Jimmy O's kindness and friendship to me when I was at Sta. 4. All these years later I remember his generosity of spirit. I hope his family can take some comfort in knowing how many lives he touched in such a positive way.

I didn't know you long sir, but I will carry with me your memory forever. You listened to me when I needed an ear and always made me smile when you and the crew came to the office/Store. I considered you a friend and I will regret not having a chance to say thank you in person. Thank you for making us all better persons for having known you.
