PHILIP HANLON

Hanlon, Philip Peter,

born January 23, 1924, beloved husband of Joan K. Hanlon, passed away peacefully on March 2, 2012 in the presence of his loving family in San Diego, CA after a brief hospital stay resulting from a fall. Phil was born in Brooklyn, NY. He graduated from the Manual Training High School in Bronx, NY, after which Phil enlisted in the US Navy and trained to become a radioman on the Destroyer Escort USS Underhill DE-682. He was later reassigned to the Fuel Tanker USS Klaskanine AOG-63. Phil was promoted to radioman 2nd class by the end of the war. After WWII, Phil attended Manhattan College in Bronx, NY and received a BA in History. Despite having received a scholarship to George Town University Law School, Phil applied for and was accepted to the FBI Academy in Quantico, VA. He completed his training and received his FBI Credentials in 1951 and was promptly assigned to the west coast office in Fresno, CA. He was introduced to his future wife, Joan K. Greene, through her brother Arthur who was also an FBI Agent. Phil and Joan married at St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Fresno, CA in 1954, then took up residence in southern CA, where they raised their five children. In 1978, Phil retired from the FBI and became a manager of security for Occidental Petroleum, and after several years of service was selected to be the personal security manager for the CEO, Dr. Armand Hammer. Phil traveled with Dr. Hammer around the world to countries and continents such as Russia, China, Asia, Europe, Africa, and South America. Phil retired from Occidental Petroleum in 1999. After 9/11, Phil was hired under contract with the FBI to support the Bureau's ongoing government background investigations. Phil was a devout Roman Catholic and an active member in his parish as a Eucharistic Minister, Lector, and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He and Joan built two homes during their life together; their second home was nestled in the hills of east Orange, CA where Phil encouraged his children in various 4H livestock projects. He loved this property, with its river canyon view and view of the orchards below their house. Phil and Joan lived there for 33 years before moving to Fallbrook, CA in 2006 to be closer to their daughters living in San Diego county. They celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary in April 2010. Joan passed away in December 2010. Phil is survived by his five loving children, Maureen, Kevin, Elaine, Laura, and Denise. He was blessed with 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The visitation will be held at Berry-Bell & Hall Mortuary, Fallbrook, CA, on Thursday, March 8, 2012 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. The funeral Mass will be held at Mission San Luis Rey, Oceanside, CA, Friday March 9, 2012 at 12:30 p.m.
